Rubio says Cruz mailers 'unusual way to end' Iowa campaign

Sen. Marco Rubio on Saturday said controversial get-out-the-vote mailers sent by rival Sen. Ted Cruz's campaign ahead of the caucuses were an 'unusual way' for the Texan to end his campaign here.

Cruz has been taking heat after one Iowa voter tweeted out a photo of a mailer he received presented as an official note slapping him with a "voter violation" for not voting.

"I had some voters mention to me they were upset about it," Rubio told reporters before a campaign rally at Iowa State University here. "Obviously, they had people's names and they gave them 'F' ratings for how they voted. I think a lot of voters were disturbed by it and again, it's kind of an unusual way to end your campaign in the state."

Pile on, they’re desperate to make hay of this.

Didn’t you think Rubio made a nice response, in contrast to Cruz’s ill-conceived ad?

Hard to say. At least one family in Iowa has been getting colorful Rubio flyers in the mail almost every day. Also lots of Rubio ads on TV making him sound like a true conservative.

You can read about the practice in these 2 articles. Both conservative and liberal campaigns have used similar mailings since 2004 in many states. They claim these mailers are more effective than going door-to-door. You have to put yourself in someone else’s shoes. We political junkies would not respond well to this. But a more disinterested voter, this might be the only thing that can motivate them. I do question how carefully they could target Cruz supporters with these, so I worry it could be motivating supporters of other candidates. I posted two articles about it earlier.

Cruz stole this dirty trick from Obama, who used the dirty trick in the 2012 campaign. Add this one to the growing list of dirty tricks cooked up by Ted “Dirty Trickster” Cruz. PS-—wonder if Glenn “Dan Rather” Beck was behind this or is he working on a new photoshopped phoney Tweet?

“Hell of a thing to have happen on your last day of work.”

omg, that’s sick. i love it!

reminds me of a joke about airline pilots:

How do airlines pilots invest their money?

They keep re-investing until all of their money is gone.

“Unusual is the understatement of the year. LOL!”

indeed. but something tells me Trump won’t be quite as “understated” about it, though! :-) :-) :-)

I initially liked Cruz and voted for him in Senate, but I cannot stand being talked down to and Cruz comes off this way in his debate responses. The mailer here just fits that same model of degrading, looking down his nose, and shaming folks.

Many conservatives are independent thinkers and headstrong by nature. I believe a good portion of the recipients of this letter will vote against him just to spite. I would! No way some guy I never met is going to give me a failing mark out of the blue.

...but something tells me Trump won't be quite as "understated" about it, though!

I've wondered about that. It wouldn't surprise me if Trump didn't make a big deal about it. I think he wants Cruz to finish second.

I've gotten a sense from various articles that Rubio is on the rise. If he finishes second, he's a very viable candidate for the establishment to rally around in NH. I don't see the establishment going for Cruz.

Ideal result for Trump would be a resounding victory with Cruz well back in second. Rubio a very distant third.

I think his response to this tomorrow will tell us how confident he is in his own GOTV and what he thinks of Cruz's chances.

PS. I'm also liking Ben Carson's number. 10%. It's enough to keep his supporters.

Your analysis is very interesting. I think you may be right about some of the things you’ve laid out.

I am a Cruz supporter...but I can say without any excuse or preamble that this was a big mistake by Cruz.

People will see and feel “big brother,” all over it...they very thing Cruz is campaigning against.

In addition, it will offend, and then anger them, and they will most likely (if they vote at all), go out and vote against whomever sent such a correspondence.

Cruz has some knuckleheads working for him...or agents working against him.

Does not matter...he himself should have seen how crazy this was and either stopped it...or if he did not find out until later...he should have apologized and fired the people who were responsible.

This will hurt him, particularly in Iowa, but also wherever people hear of it...and you can bet the competition will trumpet it far and wide.

I would argue that stupid is the wrong word to use. I would argue that its just morally wrong. I would further argue that the reason not one of the other 14 or so GOP candidates indulged in shaming letters is because its just wrong.

I was really surprised when I found out. If Trump who is my first choice did it I would no longer support him. I can no longer support Ted Cruz. It goes to character sadly.
