Two hours before Thursday night's Fox News debate, I was in constant conversations with GOP operatives, Fox anchors and other journalists, all asking the same question: Would Donald Trump show up after all?
He didn't, of course, but that shows how crazy the environment has been in Des Moines.
Megyn Kelly, the target of Trump's ire, kicked off the debate by asking Ted Cruz about The Donald's absence. Cruz used some canned humor, describing himself as a maniac, saying everyone else on the stage was stupid and ugly and that Ben Carson was a bad surgeon

Come on Fox....Let loose with the viewer stats.
Should be more interesting than today’s GDP report
Anybody who participates in this sham (Presidential "debates") lowers himself.
Anybody big enough to be President is too big to answer questions from Megan Kelly or Chris Wallace (or any of the rest of them).
So much for Murdoch’s idea for Kelly to “take out Trump.”
Circular firing squad.
Trump showed FAUX Nooz who was boss last night.
Fair and balanced and We report, you decide. Not FAUX Snewze—— try OAN and C-SPAN.
Ted should have skipped the debate too.
They hate Cruz more than they hate Trump and they managed to ring his bell a few times.
He ended well, but I fear some damage was done. He needed to walk away with this debate and they made sure it didn’t happen.
I guess we’ll see Monday if it made any difference to Iowans.

AND / OR
This is hilarious! Couldn’t they just keep their mouth shut instead of attempting to deny the obvious?
By shucking the FAUX debate and holding the Vets rally last night in Des Moines looks like Trump thunders his way to an Iowa victory. I think last night sealed the deal—but we shall see.
It’s over. Ted had his chance at leadership and it sounds like he blew it. Last night people were flocking to Trump and his numbers will rise. The semi-endorsement of Huch and Rick should carry Iowa as he was masterful as well as gracious last night.
Pray America wakes

I guess you didn’t watch. He was outstanding, turning around each attack, answering calmly and authoritatively.
He was the standout. Rubio did well as always, but his hyperactivity was more pronounced.
And no one missed the loudmouth with the bad haircut.
The name of the author of the article should be included at the top of the FR thread.
The smart strategy would have been for all of them to walk away from the interrogation posing as a “debate”.
Trump is a true leader to not answer/follow the media’s call to submit to the media’s biased venues, Fox (faux conservative) or liberal.
Santorum and Huckabee were smart enough to figure this out.
Christie is very savvy and could have foreseen this and Cruz as well. Not that I am necessarily a Christie fan, I am pro Trump all the way, however he strikes me as one of the brighter/intelligent candidates up there, Cruz as well.
Following the media’s lead in order to placate the “middle” which has the de facto effect of watering down the hardline conservative positions needed to solve the country’s problems will cause the GOPe to lose every time. They can’t seem to figure that out and it is pitiful to watch as it a fairly obvious.
Trump thinks for himself and does not follow; the country seriously needs this leadership.
Go Trump; brilliant move to be a no show.
Not according to everything I read. Sounds like his jokes were cringeworthy and lost a number of battles to Rubio. He just is not ready yet and he needed to clear up the Canadian thing and did not.
Whatever numbers Fox releases the actual numbers will be lower.
Fox has lost almost all credibility.
Roger Ailes gave Trump the perfect out. The Fox News brand took a huge hit last night. Can’t wait for the numbers. Rupert and Roger are going to be surprised at the economic impact of their Open Borders propaganda. The American People do not want AGITPROP from its media outlets.
“So much for Murdochâs idea for Kelly to ‘take out Trump.’”
But what they did reveal was that they also plan to take out Cruz, once they could get him alone, which they did last night. If Cruz thought he’d smooth sailing with Trump out of the way, he learned something there.
I’m just surprised the GOPe played that card with Trump still ahead. The only reason that I could think of was to try to rehabilitate Megan, to show that she’s willing attack people other than Trump...seems dumb, but I can’t think of anything else.
