Clock ticks down on EU passport free travel dream

Passport-free travel and hassle-free business in Europe has never been in more danger.

With more than 1 million people streaming into the European Union hoping for sanctuary or jobs, nations have erected fences, deployed troops and tightened border controls.

“What we have worked for, for so many years, we are seeing it crumbling now in front of us,” Roberta Metsola, a leading EU lawmaker on migration, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

As draconian as they might seem, most attempts to stem the migrant flow have been within the letter, if not the spirit, of the rules governing the European travel haven known as the Schengen area, a jewel in the EUs integration crown But as of mid-May, the EU is in uncharted waters. The legal options for countries like Germany, Austria and Sweden to impose ID checks on everyone who enters, including Europeans, begin to run out.

“Our citizens have a right to feel safe,” Metsola said. “If that means that we will need to keep stock of who is crossing our borders for a specific amount of time, then we will have to do it.”

...passport and hassle free travel in Europe is over...

Any convenient or safe travel to Europe is over. If you havent made your bucket list trip to Europe yet, forget it.

It portends things to come in the USA, if we tolerate it.

If they restore their borders it will be good. The European Common Market was a good idea. The common currency was a dumb idea. The European government having power over the countries’ governments was a dumb idea.

Kick the savages out, restore the borders, restore national identity and pride and Europe can be great again.

Last time I was in Europe, the EU didn’t exist so passports were required for all entry. No biggie.

I’ve traveled twice through Europe since the EU and before and one still needs to have your passport with you so I would think restoring borders is a good thing. It simply made cutting through countries by train or bus easier for people who shouldn’t be there.

That’s right, blame it all on poverty-stricken Greece, totally overwhelmed by illegal immigrants they can ill afford, and with totally porous borders as they are surrounded by water, making it easy for illegals to enter by sea from Turkey and elsewhere.

I’d go after Turkey myself, but it isn’t part of the EU, both a blessing and a curse to them, and thus can’t be controlled and bullied like little Greece that probably rues the day they joined the EU. Life sucks for Europe right now.

Turkey... isn't part of the EU, both a blessing and a curse to them, and thus can't be controlled and bullied like little Greece that probably rues the day they joined the EU.

Turkey fought for years some decade(s) ago to be included, and now we see why. It's a staging area for the invasion. Had they been a member, Europe would have completely fallen by now due to that ludicrous Schengen Agreement that abolished border controls in member states.

Different currencies have NEVER been a hindrance to trade. NEVER. And it is lunacy to think you can have one currency, but different fiscal and budget policies.

The free movement of goods, people and capital was, as you noted, generally a good idea.

But what that morphed into was some sort of transnational socialistic superpower that tells people to sort through their garbage and recycle according to Brussels, that gay rights and abortion are ok everywhere, and that socialism is just dandy.

You are so right.

I hope the EU dies. The only downside to that would be that we wouldn’t get to see Nigel Farage’s fine speeches in the Euro Parliament!
