Ted Cruz Tells Reporters "I'm a Christian First, American Second"
Yahoo News ^ | 25 Jan 2016 | Tom McKay

According to presidential candidate and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, there's one thing that more important to him than the country he's running to lead: his God.

In a remarkable exchange in New Hampshire, Politico reports, Cruz told reporters "I'm a Christian first, American second, conservative third and Republican fourth."

"I'll tell ya, there are a whole lot of people in this country that feel exactly the same way," he added.

Cruz, currently ranked second in GOP candidate polls according to RealClearPolitics, enjoys wide support among evangelical Christians in important, early-voting primary states like Iowa, where Cruz is locked in a tight race with current frontrunner Donald Trump. Cruz repeatedly accused Trump and his support of "more deal-making" and enjoying the support of unpopular "establishment" Republicans.

By proclaiming himself a Christian first and an American second, Cruz is professing higher loyalties than the United States — odd for a candidate who has repeatedly accused Muslims of doing much the same thing.

I agree with Cruz. A man who does not follow his faith is weak. That said it is up to the electorate to decide if they want to elected a man of God, a believer in name only, an atheist, or a mudslime (we have one of these and how is it working out).

-- He's speaking directly to the majority of his followers. --

The trick to getting elected is to have a majority of your followers also be a majority of the voters.

Ah, the red herring approach. A rather pathetic form of non-rational persuasion, don’t ya think?

“Muslims say I am a Muslim first an American second and he says that’s wrong?”

It’s another ham-handed quote that is going to mire him in yet another distraction.

Of course G-d comes first. Our inalienable rights come from G-d. It's in the Declaration, it's not a fringe viewpoint..

In the eyes of G-d, you are of one flesh with your wife. Your children are from your flesh. Family is second.

Country is third, as long as the Constitution is honored (an increasingly dubious supposition).

Smartest people in here shouldn’t take a lot of stock in liberal hit pieces on Conservatives.

A Christian who tells rich Gays one thing in private to get money and tells Christians something else in public to get their votes.

Pray tell me what Ted said differently. Please provide specific quotes and links, not just repeating some blogger's interpretation of Ted's remarks.

Ted has never wavered from his opposition to SSM. All he said was that as President it wouldn't be one of the first 3 things on his list to address. Since changing the situation on SSM will have to come from either Congress or SCOTUS, I don't see a problem with that statement - there is literally NOTHING the president can do on that subject on his own. But there ARE things the president can do right away to correct some of the problems in our country, like strictly enforcing the immigration laws, ending a lot of the regulations and EOs that have been imposed, etc.

Just wondering. Do you think that you may perhaps be trivializing the name of God in your screen name? Are you using the name to exalt something about yourself.

I have heard that little alliterative device before, used to describe what built the United States, but I have never seen anyone appropriate it as a title exclusive to themselves.

Actually, any Christian that would not answer the same way, I would seriously question either their salvation or their understanding of Christianity.

What Cruz takes issue with is Sharia Law subverting the Constitution.

That’s a no-brainer.

I took from my belt buckle, which says “God, Guns and Guts Made America Free”. This is the first time I have run into anyone on FR who has a problem with the obvious.

A better way of putting it:

“I value my core Christian faith as one of the top priorities in my life, and lean on it to guide me through good and bad times.”

NOT:

“I’m a Christian First, American Second”

Is this really difficult to understand how poorly-delivered that was?

Then he is absolutely, 100%m unqualified to be POTUS.

You are President of the United Sates. You are not President of the Christians in the United State.

Furthermore, I would never believe someone like this who swears to uphold the Constitution.

Don’t wanna be an America first Teddy? Maybe you’re Canadian after all.

yes, Ted got that one right.

What ‘’red herring’’? It’s a fact. Raul, Sr, himself is on you tube, speaking to some megachurch up around DFW, talking about this very thing. After 40 years of this crap, more than a sprinkling of people have been on the wrong end of this cult & lived to tell about it.

You know, y’all might be better off being open & honest about your agenda & your urgency rather than the embarrassingly transparent & fallacious narratives you try to use to mask the truth.
Nah. Probably not. But at least you could say you were honest.
As if that mattered to you.
Sick things.
