Martial law declared in New York City

It's the nagging fear many have about our government: what would happen if martial law was declared? New York City just found out, at least temporarily.

Eleven states as well as Washington D.C. declared states of emergency in the wake of the massive record-breaking snowstorm which blanketed the East. But New York City went a step further. Governor Andrew Cuomo declared martial law in New York City by ordering all people to stay inside under police enforcement. He issued an absolute travel ban for anything that is not an emergency vehicle.

The New York Police Department put out a blunt announcement on Saturday: "After 2:30 p.m. and you're on the road, we will arrest you."

As if that wasn't direct enough, the NYPD reiterated, ""Stay off the road. We don't want to have to arrest you."

A spokesperson for the New York Police Department said the ban just means no vehicles on the roads. Walking, running, and bicycles are permitted. "They can pedal all they want," said the spokesman

The police did request people not to walk in the streets so people could do their job.

Wait until an epidemic like ebola or other disease hits a place like that.

I dont understand how even ONE fellow italian can be liberal.

grandparents and parents didn’t leave because socialism was so great.

and some came and went back more than a few times. until they realized the future was here.

western europe right about now should suit Cuomo, De Blasio, Pelosi and all the others just fine. i’ll chip in for the plane fare.

Oh good gravy! They did this last year too, along with closing the NYS Thruway. Someone said, “Don’t make the first responders have to go out to rescue YOU!” Believe me, I did not get nervous about this in the least. (I went back to bed.)

Have somewhat similar routines here in the midwest maybe a few times in a normal snowy winter. Widely ignored as well.

The author is clueless as to the definition of martial law. Inherently it is rule by the military outside normal constitutional processes. The governors and mayors in the northeast instead are acting in accordance with powers granted to them by their respective state constitutions and laws.

Doing so is reasonable in for limited time in the face of extreme weather, but I can easily see individuals going overboard when granted extra authority. The NE is rife with would-be petty tyrants like deBlasio.

This was not "Martial law" it was a travel ban as in "temporarily keep your damn cars off the roads until the blizzard is over and the streets have been plowed". Perfectly normal and acceptable under the circumstances. FWIW, it was lifted Sunday.

Most of the boros and townships here in central PA did the exact same thing (enacted travel bans) from Saturday afternoon until most were lifted by this morning.

The plow trucks have enough of a difficult time but even more so when they have to deal with stupid motorists who get stuck in the middle of the road because they don't have good winter driving skills or are not driving big 4x4's and even some of them who because they have a 4x4, think they are invincible and end up getting hopelessly stuck. Not to mention that it impedes emergency vehicles from getting through.

i would imagine they’d write up a ticket.

put someone in jail for that and there’d be an uproar.

at least on Staten Island. Can’t speak for the liberal boroughs.

**NYPD reported 25 summonses were issued during the travel ban, and one arrest for driving while intoxicated.**

So on the same linked page WND, states the actual info, making their salacious headline moot.

Pretty thin gruel to be labeled “martial law.” The search for the Boston Marthon bomber, now that was closer. The “stay inside” order was absolute, and homes were subjected to search without any probable cause.

i’m not sure what the point of changing the name was, because was never any way he was going to get our vote.

we vote conservative, not based on where our parents and grandparents came from.

that’s just good for a free place to stay in Sicily :)

DiBlasio's announcement for NYC was surreal.

I am a North Carolina born and raised American who moved to Puerto Rico for my last year of high school and graduated from Univ of Puerto Rico. Had to learn Spanish and became fluent. DiBlasio felt the need to read the Spanish translation of his announcements.

Like fingernails on a chalk board. DiBlasio wouldn't be able to order a cup of coffee in San Juan.

Our language is English you twit. Those who are here from foreign cultures need to learn English like I learned Spanish. My pet peeve is to pull up to an ATM and see Spanish instructions. It's become personal for me.
