Gov. Kasich has a secret. He hides it well as he peddles his plain-spoken, real-deal, son-of-a-mailman sales pitch as a Republican presidential candidate in New Hampshire.
The secret is secure with Kasich loyalists. Mr. Kasich is mum about the details, but a left-leaning blog with an emphasis on Ohio and national politics is on the right track. Plunderbund suggests "a scandal begging to be born" is bubbling in the governor's home state.
Out-of-state media are oblivious to the disgrace at the Ohio Department of Education. Team Kasich has effectively kept the story under wraps on the campaign trail.
[ ]
Former ODE school choice director David Hansen, the man in charge of charter school oversight, engaged in a fraudulent scheme to boost the evaluations of some charters. Mr. Hansen, whose wife worked as the governor's chief of staff until she left to manage his presidential campaign, admitted scrubbing data on failing online and dropout recovery-charters to improve their standing in the state.
Some outraged state school board members charged Mr. Hansen with breaking the law and demanded an impartial investigation. Team Kasich quashed that notion and contained the political damage.
[ ]
But the candidate is trying to hide other dirt. The Kasich chiefs at ODE, who were required by law to judge charter school sponsors with the same academic and administrative performance criteria used for traditional public schools, broke that law. The GOP power brokers who control Ohio lined up to protect the governor and let the ODE fraud slide.
From State Auditor Dave Yost, one of Mr. Kasich's campaign co-chairs in the state, to Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien, who prosecuted similar data scrubbing in Columbus City Schools, top Republican officials are reluctant to pursue acknowledged fraud at the highest levels of the state education department.

Ohio Ping
Let me know if you would like to be added or removed from the list.
To its credit the Dispatch has reported on this thoroughly. Just more bureaucrats fiddling the numbers to make themselves look good, students and the truth be damned.
This creep was best buds with Gary Condit. He’s got scandals galore in his closet. The media would love to have Kay Sick as the nominee, because he would be obliterated by Hillary (or even Bernie the Red).
was the son of a mail man!
What about Lehman Bros? They didn’t get a bail out IIRC.
Kasich has been good for Ohio and that’s where he needs to stay ... although I love that he’s helping to split the estab vote in these primaries
this was supposed to come out after he won the nomination a week before the general election. not right before he loses in New Hampshire. who’s in charge of the scandal timing?
I take it you don’t live in Ohio.
I do, and am not looking forward to my taxes skyrocketing to pay for Kasich’s expansion of Obama’s Medicaid.
Go there often . He’s been good on the jobs front , wasn’t aware of the tax issue.
Good for Ohio would’ve been electing Ken Blackwell as Governor. Now HE was a Presidential contender.
Blackwell was no babe in the woods. He had won repeatedly statewide. What sank him was running in a terrible year (2006), and having the baggage of the corrupt liberal RINO Taftite Establishment, for which he had nothing to do with, around his neck.
I vehemently disagree that the best Ohio can do is the likes of weasel Kay Sick. The state can very much elect actual Conservatives if given the option in a good year.
I also disagree that Ohio will knee-jerkly vote Democrat for President this year. That 3-5% you cite was the margin of loss for the last two weak ringers the RINOs put up. Running a nominee who actually wants to win, one who motivates the base, Ohio will be in the bag. Pennsylvania will be in the win column this time, too, for the same reasons.
After the failure of bubba Bob Taft, Blackwell could have been the 2nd coming of Christ Himself and he would have still lost with an R by his name.
This state votes for wartime Presidents and has been trending steadily leftward for the past 20 years. Kasich is as conservative as you’re going to see from here on out. Hate to break it to you. There’s a reason the Congressional districts are hilariously gerrymandered in this state.
With the Cincy and Columbus burbs going leftward, the 3 C’s outweigh the rest of the state (before you even bring in Toledo and Dayton). A statewide election is going to bring a centrist Republican (Kasich, Portman) or a leftist Democrat.
As it is, the ONLY reason Kasich won so handily is the Ohio Democrats are morons and ran an idiot from Cleveland without fully vetting him first. Kasich would have been in deep trouble had Strickland run again or if Brown had left the Senate.
Disagree all you want - we’ll see who is right in November.
I reiterated that point, minus the religious part.
"This state votes for wartime Presidents and has been trending steadily leftward for the past 20 years."
The state goes back and forth, but it's in a GOP era. If you looked at it in the 1980s with it under the control of Gov. Celeste, Sens. Metzenbaum & Glenn and Speaker Vern Riffe in the State House, you'd have thought it was pretty hopelessly Democrat.
"Kasich is as conservative as you're going to see from here on out. Hate to break it to you."
Sorry. I simply disagree.
"There's a reason the Congressional districts are hilariously gerrymandered in this state."
Nothing "hilarious" about it. That's to ensure a GOP majority. Would you prefer more Democrats in those seats instead of the present 12R-4D majority ?
"With the Cincy and Columbus burbs going leftward, the 3 Câs outweigh the rest of the state (before you even bring in Toledo and Dayton). A statewide election is going to bring a centrist Republican (Kasich, Portman) or a leftist Democrat."
Pushing/pimping leftist RINOs are the quickest way to start losing elections to Democrats. Both creepy liberal Kay Sick and Portman, who seems to think openly defying God to appease his mentally ill son, are precisely the kind of phonies who have no business holding any office. If the state moves to the Democrats, it will be due to these idiots. The state deserves to have Conservatives in charge, and it has been far too long.
"As it is, the ONLY reason Kasich won so handily is the Ohio Democrats are morons and ran an idiot from Cleveland without fully vetting him first. Kasich would have been in deep trouble had Strickland run again or if Brown had left the Senate."
Hell, the Dems might as well have cross-nominated Kay Sick. With RINOs like him and Portman, you don't need Democrats.
"Disagree all you want - we'll see who is right in November."
If the establishment puts up a loser/ringer for the 3rd time a row, you'll be right about losing the state. If the base votes for a winner in the primary, I'll be right.
