Interesting, and a step toward the day when various terrorist-bankrolling Mideast regimes will have no use for their oil except to make goat lube.

Have a friend who owns one. If I drove anymore I’d get one in a heartbeat.
VERY nice automobile.
To: Gandalf the Mauve
My buddy has one. It’s no Chevy Volt. It’s a work of art.

Interesting indeed.
Frankly, I’m hoping to see a graphene battery advance that will increase density and *radically* decrease charging time, making electric cars a really practical solution. Then I’m in.

Jags, BMWs, Mercedes, and Porsche will all be desirable collectibles in 20 years. Not so Lexus. They are like very good paper towels to car collectors. They work well, but once used, you just throw them in the trash. Tesla are good cars, largely robotic built. But they are waaaaay overpriced.

How well do they drive in the cold weather? Does the cold drain the battery life?

There is no source for Tesla sales claims besides Tesla. They are not tracked the way other manufacturers’ vehicle sales are tracked.

These numbers demonstrate a critical concept.
Musk realized that the core technology of a workable electric had minimum cost. Selling a $50k car that’s trying to compete with IC cars in the $30k range was a recipe for failure.
So instead he decided to move up, not down, in the marketplace. Build a car that competes in the $80k and up range. Yes, it’s a much narrower market, but it’s a marketplace in which an electric could compete on style, performance, and amenities.
There is price floor for this technology so they don’t try to compete on the budget market.

If you put the Viper V-10 in it you’d have a decent ride.

People who can afford a Tesla S can also afford an extra real car for their convenience.
This is no great movement toward electric cars.

I have a friend who is a new car dealer. He has about dozen new cars and several motorcycles that just sit in a warehouse and are almost never driven.
Cars like the Tesla, and Lamborghinis, Nissan GTRs, etc.
He drives the Lambo once a year in some rally.
These are just toys for rich people, not transportation.

and a step toward the day when various terrorist-bankrolling Mideast regimes will have no use for their oil Bogus logic. The Tesla car is a waste of resources, it does not save us from importing oil. To do that we would have to drive economy cars, not luxury cars. Second, imports from the Persian Gulf are 17% of all petroleum imports. The market will decide if those are cheaper and will import them, Tesla drivers have no influence on that at all. Also try using a solar panel to charge one, you'll find you'll need 20 parking spaces worth of panels to make the trip home (if it is sunny). Otherwise in general they suck power out of the grid with whatever source the grid has.

I test drove a BMW i3 recently. It was a hoot to drive and a beautiful interior. 0-60 in 7 sec. I want to wait for the Bolt and Tesla 3, but if they are not as much fun to drive, I’m going to get the BMW.
