Thanks to RobStark on the Tesla Motors Club forum, we've got news that the Tesla Model S was the #1 best-selling large luxury car (or "premium car," as some might prefer to call the class) in the United States in 2015.
As we all know, Tesla doesn't report sales/deliveries by country. However, various outlets estimate Tesla sales using a variety of methods. EV Obsession estimated 26,566 Tesla Model S sales in the US in 2015. Rob notes that the lowest estimate was 24,200. In either case, the Model S outsold the Mercedes S-Class, the BMW 7-Series, the BMW 6-Series, the Audi A7, the Audi A8, the Porsche Panamera, and every other car in this class.
Here's a quick look at how all these cars compared in 2015 vs 2014:

Have a friend who owns one. If I drove anymore I’d get one in a heartbeat.
VERY nice automobile.
My buddy has one. It’s no Chevy Volt. It’s a work of art.
Interesting indeed.
Frankly, I’m hoping to see a graphene battery advance that will increase density and *radically* decrease charging time, making electric cars a really practical solution. Then I’m in.
Math doesn’t add up for Tesla.... 30.4375% not 43.76%
March is not far way. Can’t wait for Model 3. Seriously thinking of buying it
Are Teslas well built?
Those government subsidies make a difference! Plus its cool.
IT would be a 30% decrease from the higher number to the lower number, but a 44% increase from the lower number to the higher number.
Do they get a gov’mnt rebate with them?
Wonder what the REAL cost per vehicle is without the taxpayer subsidies.......
“Tesla are good cars, largely robotic built. But they are waaaaay overpriced. “
No, they are exceptionally great cars! They are overpriced because they are still relatively low production. Then there’s the new 4 wheel drive model that has a second motor driving the front wheels. Zero to 60 in 3 seconds, 1/4 mile speed, about 115 mph! virtually nothing with an IC engine can touch this car for performance.
How would like to be driving one in DC on Wednesday night when it took 8 hours to get home?
I am seeing more and more on the road locally. Was admiring a beautiful dark gray or black one on the highway on Thursday and sat in traffic next to a red Model S yesterday. It is a true work of art.
“Are Teslas well built?”
They make German luxury cars look like crap! We live less than 20 miles from the Tesla factory and there are lots of them here. They are simply gorgeous cars! We are a bedroom community for San Francisco and the Silicon Valley. With their 300 mile range, they are a teriffic commute car for executives.
Toy
How well do they drive in the cold weather? Does the cold drain the battery life?
Hmmm.
From an economics perspective, is it credible to say "#1 in the U.S." and "waaaaaay overpriced" in the same sentence? {;^)
