CHUCK TODD: What do you do with the 11 million people though? Do you have to send 'em back, or do you give them a way to get legal?
TED CRUZ: Chuck, I don't accept the premise that you have to solve every aspect of this problem all at once. President Obama and the Democrats focus on that issue because the question you're asking is the most divisive partisan question in this entire debate. And I don't believe President Obama wants to solve this.
CHUCK TODD: I understand that it's divisive. But theâ it's still a problem.
TED CRUZ: B-- but-- but you don't have to solve every problem at once. Look, here's the problemâ
CHUCK TODD: That's fine. But explain how you do it?
TED CRUZ: I am explaining how. The last time Congress passed immigration reform was in the 1980s. And Congress came to the American people with the following tradeoff. Congress said there were three million people living here illegally. Congress said, "We will grant amnesty to those three million. In exchange, we're gonna secure the borders. We're gonna solve the problem so that illegal immigration goes away."
Well, we all know what happens. The amnesty happened. And the border never got secured.
And here's the sad truth. A lot of Republicans in the Washington cartel, they're all for amnesty too because from the perspective of the Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street, it's cheap labor.
CHUCK TODD: You still didn't say what you'd do with the 11 million.
TED CRUZ: Well, my view is first, we secure the borders and solve the problem of illegal immigration. And then I think we can have a conversation about what to do about the people who remain here. I don't think the American people will accept any solution until we demonstrate step number one, we can secure the border.
CHUCK TODD: So anything's on the table? Potentially deportation or not deportation, but anything's on the table for the 11 millionâ
TED CRUZ: I think we should secure the border and then have a conversation at that point. Stop using the Washington approach of I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today. The American people arenât going for it.
Using Jason at PoliticusUSA to attack a conservative? I’ve seen it all now!
Well lookey there, the junior senator is for amnesty!
No, Cruz said the first step is to secure the border. Without that, nothig else matters.
You really are dumb. It’s a transcript and a video.
Politicus-sourced articles should be banned here. Easley is a freak who is enraged at Obama for being such a hard-right reactionary conservative.
Umm. Jason was just quoting an interview. I saw it at the time and I believe it is 100% Accurate.
Like a Wall right?
But Cruz won’t answer direct questions as to whether legalization was off the table. Says there will be a “conversation” about it later. Cruz in 2013 is on record supporting legalization, provided it happened after the border is secured. Cruz’s “conversation” talk, not only mirroring Scott Walker, fits his earlier statements.
And that is the precise point when you finally snipped the last remaining thread of my support for you, Ted.
I don't want a "conversation" about what to do with the illegals who've been stealing the life sustaining bread off my family's table for the last decade.
I don't want to have a "conversation" about the vile foreigners who are overwhelming the public assistance roles in my state.
I don't want to have a "conversation" about the children of illegals who are crowding out American children in our public schools.
I don't want to have a "conversation" about the decimation of formerly decent, working class neighborhoods, that are being overrun with illegals receiving Section 8 housing vouchers.
I don't want to have a "conversation" about all the drunk driving illegals who are killing Americans by the thousands on our roads and highways every year.
I don't want to have a "conversation" about being forced to read every damn label in Spanish and English because the pansies who run our country are so pitifully pc that they force us to accommodate these invaders' language and customs. IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!
No, Ted. The American people have been having this "conversation" for decades now, and WE'RE DONE TALKING!
Too bad you're too brilliant to see the forest for the trees.
Oh for heaven’s sake, Senator Cruz is a smart and good man; he should not be attacked like this by fellow Republicans. He is as good as can be expected on the amnesty issue at this point. The only reasons I do not support him for President are: 1) I do not think he is constitutionally eligible for the office, 2) I think Donald Trump is a much stronger candidate, is good enough on the important issues, and has a much better chance against Hillary, 3) We all need to get behind one candidate NOW or we will get Jeb Bush shoved down our throats, just as Romney and McCain were.
TED CRUZ: I think we should secure the border and then have a conversation at that point.
You don't agree we have to close the gate first, else the illegals just simple stroll right back over the border when deported?
“No, Cruz said the first step is to secure the border. Without that, nothing else matters.”
Aw come on! While that’s certainly a first step, you really don’t think he has any ideas about what to do with the 11 million? If you think he doesn’t, I have a couple of bridges for sale! As worst, it’s shallow thinking, but I think that he and Rubio, both being Hispanic, will “help out their people” just like Holder said he’d do for “his.”
Eisenhower deported 3 million illegals in six months, so it can be done.
How exactly does Cruz ‘fall apart’ in this interview? Idiocy.
Cruz is right that you can’t deal with the issue instantly. But you set policies in place & gradually the problem solves itself. Deny benefits to illegals. Enforce the laws against employing illegals. Fine businesses that do. Put in place a ‘bracero’ program to allow field workers in when needed, with proof that they go home when the job is done. And build the Wall or do whatever it takes to secure the border. Deport illegals when you find them. And others will deport themselves when they can no longer get work or benefits. It’s really not a difficult issue. It will take time, however.
You need to wake up to the fact that Ted is a squish on sending the invaders home.
Oh yes, he has a deportation angle to his immigration plan, but read it carefully. He's only talking about deporting "criminal aliens".
There's nothing at all about what to do with the 30 to 40 million who are quietly colonizing our nation.
Face the facts, friend. For whatever reason, Ted is not in favor of sending them home.
Don Trump is for touchback immigration (amnesty) and you know it.
Trump taught a lot of people how to respond to these gotcha questions, and not come off looking like a meanie
1) Define all the problems caused by the issue. Illegals in the US>point to all the crime, people killed (Kate, and many others), strangers with who knows what intents, Boarder Guards and ICE told to stand down, impact on jobs, expense, etc.
2) Be compassionate> What about the Children born here> They go back too, we WILL KEEP THE FAMILIES INTACT.
3) It’s been done many times by Democrats, everything was fine, you all will be happy.
4) Wrap up>We have to do this, we either have laws and a country, or we do not!
They simply waltz right back in.
You know that.
Facts? Face the facts, friend. For whatever reason, Ted is not in favor of sending them home.
What facts and where did you pull them out of the air? Cruz never said that he wanted 30 million illegals to stay in the US and did not imply that. You are guessing what happens after the border is secure.
But securing the border is great. It won’t happen overnight.
