HONOLULU (AP) — Authorities searching the area where two Marine helicopters crashed off Hawaii have found some life rafts that were carried aboard the aircraft, but still no sign of the 12 crew members who were on board.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Sara Mooers said Monday she believes three life rafts have been recovered so far. Some were inflated, but it was unclear how they came to be inflated, she said.

The search for the Marines entered its fourth day Monday. Mooers said at this point, it is still a search for survivors.

Rescuers from various agencies have been searching round-the-clock since the Coast Guard was notified late Thursday of the crash by a civilian who saw the aircraft flying and then disappear and a fireball.

The Marines were alerted when the CH-53E helicopters carrying six crew members each failed to return to their base at Kaneohe Bay following a nighttime training mission. Hours later, a Coast Guard helicopter and C-130 airplane spotted debris 2 1/2 miles off of Oahu.

I hate to be so suspicious, but I have to wonder who benefits by this tragedy. What individual, what organization, corporation or system could possibly want such a terrible thing to happen now, in that area, and in such an inconclusive manner?
Until more is recovered, many questions can never be fully answered.

Who benefits?

Maybe somebody who wants to force the Marines to do things they don’t wish to do.

Two helicopters were flying together at night in poor weather over open water. I’d guess they collided.

I don’t recall that the CH-53’s life rafts inflate automatically, though, so I wonder about that. They’re heavy, and you have to toss them out first.

No , this was a training accident , pure and sad ... Big CH-53E’s in close formation , late in the evening , they probably clipped one another and that was all she wrote .
It was a terrible set of coincidences that caused this to happen just as Oahu North Shore was being pummeled by the highest surf of the years ; waves topping 30 ft and up to 40+ at some points . Such big surf is caused be deep trough ocean swell that suck material down and then push it under . Add rain/wind squalls to that . They never had a chance .
One might ask “ why were they out flying in such conditions ?” Marines train for all contingencies, they are fearless . The flying weather was not all that bad and rain is a given in Hawaii , but to go down in to those big wave troughs was the real peril . And that’s what happened .
I fear they are all lost , although it’s not ‘official’ yet . Just pray for their loved ones who are in such deep grief and so burdened with their sudden loss right now . Pray for the morale of the command ; MAG-24 . Pegasus was the last of the CH Squadrons here in Hawaii , it’s 2 sister squadrons having been retired due to ‘sequestration’ and the incoming of the future Osprey squadrons . Pegasus , that great winged horse , is the last . HMH-463 Marines and their families need to be in your thoughts and prayers . Their ops continue . Even with the perils on the seas ...

Yeah, cause 53s, at midnight, conducting military training.... That’s a nearly impossible scenario for a collision.

It was an accident. Not everything that happens is the fault of the vast right/left/up/down/charmed/strange (whatever) conspiracies.

Flying formation in CH-53s requires very close attention from both aircrews, quadruplely so at night. You can go out for a night hop in very cold weather, flying formation or sling loads in a confined area LZ. When you finish the hop, you often find that you are soaked with sweat.

I’m told that when the jet jocks are wired with EKG monitors during night carrier OPs, they record MORE stress than when being shot at in combat.

Realistic training can be very dangerous. I have many friends who died while flying training flights. Several were in CH-53s, one in a A-6, one in a CH-46. Others broke their necks or backs and recovered to fly again.

There are six types of quarks, known as flavors: up, down, strange, charm, top, and bottom.

They were all hanging out over at the Large Hadron Collider, trying to work up enough energy to accoplish something. I told them "Boson sent me", so they told me all about those nefarious plots...

Have been praying.

There are so many questions yet to be answered. Thanks for this update as nothing on news all weekend! At least I didn’t see or hear anything.
