See also: The most plausible explanation for the 10 riverine sailors captured by Iran
A fascinating comment on Rick Moranâs blog about the Iranian capture of our sailors is making waves in the blogosphere and on Facebook. It makes a lot more sense than any of the official explanations we have received for the capture and subsequent release of the sailors.
Thomas Lipscomb explains:
Flash! A former Navy SEAL, Matt Bracken, just blew up what I have been calling "a pack of lies from the US and Iran" on what the hell happened that got our boats captured and taken to the Farsi Islands.
Remember: the single most dangerous area in all the Persian Gulf is a small group of Island in almost the middle of the heavily travelled shipping lanes that is a major naval base for Iran and the HQ of the radical IRG for special operations of their own against all the countries abutting the Gulf. A top Marine told me our two boats were special ops boats with crews that delivered our own SEALS... the direct rivals of the IRG on Farsi.
The idea that toxic area would be a possible rendezvous site area for a refueling is idiotic... as is the idea of commo and navigation failure. You might as reasonably expect Gibraltar to be a rendezvous point for resupply for the Nazi subs in Das Boot.
If the US press today weren't evenly split between toadys and military incoherents, they should have seen what has been clear to anyone who has any military experience.
Here is Matt Bracken's stunning take:

ROE? - the people saying that are likely not veterans. No one, and I mean no one takes a USN vessel without a fight and I don't care if its international waters or not. Some lawyer came on here a couple days ago saying " the Iranians had every justification to take those boats if they were within 3 miles of Farsi isle" i
Looked like a pilot for a left wing wet dream about the military. Hoax.
The pictures just didn’t look right to me either.
The whole thing smells like a ‘setup’. Just another dirty trick.
The explanations pouring out of Obamaâs lying Administration spokespersons from the Secretary of Defense to the Secretary of State simply do not stand the light of day. In fact they insult the intelligence of any knowledgeable citizen with military experience.â¨â¨
Once again the press has been played for fools...
I served for 22 months on a USCG patrol boat during WW2-—at one point we were assigned to anti-submarine patrols off the East Coast-—we always were 2 boat patrols to help if a sub was spotted and in case of mechanical problems so one boat could tow the other if needed——that was 70 odd years ago and I would think the same precautions would be part of modern Naval ops——it is my personal opinion that these boats were delivering something Obumbo and Kerry wanted to hide from media view-(note-couple of days later our prisoners are released, giving about4-5 for one)-—just my 02 cents and past experience
But that still suggests that the US failed to provide air cover, or really try to stop the seizure. Had an F/A-18 arrived on scene, the patrol boat would have been on the losing side of the overwhelming firepower equation, and they would have known it. The chance of a ship evading a modern laser guided bomb is nearly zero. Nobody on that patrol boat would want to bet on being able to control the damage caused by a Hellfire missile hit followed by a couple of direct hits by 500 lb bombs, or even a few good 20mm cannon runs.
Also, it is almost unimaginable that the carrier group, or the 5th Fleet Command isn't tracking the location of the patrol boats. I can imagine a couple of Boston Whalers sneaking up on a US boat, but those larger combat ships should be under continuous tracking. The whole area is quite small, the boats were only about 120 miles from 5th Fleet Headquarters, and there are land based aircraft about 25 miles further away.
I doubt we'll know what really happened for a long, long time.
