Ted Cruz Played Donald Trump Like a Fiddle
The Corner ^ | 1/16/16 | Rich Lowry

Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are, not surprisingly, now in a total war. One school of thought is that Cruz made a mistake in cozying up to Trump for so long now that The Donald is lambasting him in the harshest and most demagogic terms. I don’t think that’s right. Even though Cruz’s “friendship” was transparently insincere–and often cringe-inducing–it was very shrewd, and the timing of the break-up is too. It was very unlikely that the truce could last forever, and the timing of the open hostilities means that Cruz can blame Trump for firing the first shot (the Canadian stuff) and, more importantly, attack Trump from a much stronger political position. With his surge over the last month or so, Cruz has amassed an extraordinary reserve of credibility on the right. A recent poll in Iowa had him at 91-6 favorable-unfavorable among tea partiers. If anyone has the standing to make the case against Donald Trump, it is Ted Cruz. And he won’t be making a “golly, Donald, why can’t you be nicer?” case against Trump, but a hard-hitting conservative one (and while a divided and feckless establishment, such as it is, watches from the sidelines). If there was any tactical error here it was on the part of Donald Trump. It has been pretty clear for a long time that Cruz had great potential in Iowa, but back when Trump could have dropped a bomb on Cruz before he took off, the mogul was either taken in by Cruz’s submissiveness, or willing to play along with the terms of their faux friendship.

In terms of being played like a fiddle... It might also turn out that Cruz has done the same to the Donald in regards to this New York baloney.

Either Ted Cruz is a original-intent Constitutionalist and therefore ineligible to be President or he is a living-document Constitutionalist and eligible to be President. It is one or the other, but it can't be both.

Oh Noes! Trump is done!

Trump is 1000 times more likeable that Cruz. I was done with Cruz after the last debate. His tired old “values” attack on NY is just dumb. His speaking style is awful like an annoying version of Mr. Rogers. He looks like a clown and he;s Canadian.

We should make a collection of all the delusional headlines and predictions that have been posted lately and list them in a month or two. It should be fun.

.... The truly important difference between Cruz and Trump, though, is simple: one is a conservative and the other isn’t.

Cute kitty.

I like all of our Republican candidates (except Graham).

But the endless Cruz threads...

Someone hired to do this?

The beauty of this feud, assuming it’s real and not orchestrated by the respective campaigns, is that it has rendered the remaining other candidates moot. And if Cruz is nominated, I would still swim across Lake Michigan to vote for him, unlike the Trump haters who would stay home.

Counting down. 14 days left then it all begins. Cruz has about 5% chance to win the nom.

You said it right there. The damage to Cruz will be from his hipocrisy, not his birth status. And in true Clintonesque fashion, denying an obvious problem and saying it’s “settled” only increases the amount of buzz and time the issue remains in play (we’ve been on Obama’s birth status for 8 years now).

Cruz fans mistake is in thinking that the more people hear Cruz speak and explain these legalisms, the better they will like him.
