I looked it up. Senators are not required to get security clearances.

However, remember that he has been a government employee in the past. He was a clerk in the judiciary. He was with DOJ for a time as well. Was he never checked for a security clearance? I would think citizenship status would be asked.

Well, you would think so. The constitution says citizen, not dual citizen, but Ted is a little loose with the truth.

Yes, but then it occurred to me that he’s been a government employee as well.

Cruz has stated that when he was a child, his mother told him that she would have to make an affirmative act to claim Canadian citizenship for him, so his family assumed that he did not hold Canadian citizenship.[140] In August 2013, after the Dallas Morning News pointed out that Cruz had dual Canadian-American citizenship,[141][142] he applied to formally renounce his Canadian citizenship and ceased being a citizen of Canada on May 14, 2014.[140][143]

Cruz ran for Senate in 2012. If he had disclosed his dual citizenship it wouldn’t have come up in August of 2013.

I really don’t know the requirements for DOJ employees. IIRC, most of the Clinton WH staff went without clearances, tho I had thought some higher level of security clearance would have been required.

It could be a question of the level of clearance needed for the positions Cruz held. Some clearances are relatively low level and it wouldn’t matter if the person was dual-citizen so long as s/he’d committed no crimes, nor done anything to set off the red flags.

I.e., someone I know worked at the Pentagon and had a certain level of clearance (working in admin offices, nothing super secret so far as I knew). This person also worked at an office within DHS, same clearance (again, so far as I know).

THEN she applied for a job with another govt office that required a high level of clearance and, much to her surprise, she was turned down because she had lived overseas - in an allied country - within the past 3 years. (IIRC at that point it had been 2.75 years, so she could have reapplied 3 months or so later and gotten the clearance and job).

The point being that there are several levels of security clearances, some far more demanding than others. At the lower level, which is probably adequate for DOJ lawyers, you just have to have a clean record. But you have to have a clean record just to practice law.

The forms used for background checks would presumably ask citizenship status. Assuming he filled those out accurately (and I do assume that), he had to be aware that he was a dual national. Why keep it? Its not like travel to Canada is restricted or anything.

I disagree since you don’t really run for Prime Minister. You get picked to eat a parliamentary slate.

IRREFUTABLE AUTHORITY HAS SPOKEN
(Oct. 18, 2009) The Post & Email has in several articles mentioned that the Supreme Court of the United States has given the definition of what a ‘natural born citizen’ is. Since being a natural born citizen is an objective qualification and requirement of office for the U.S. President (and VP), it is important for all U.S. Citizens to understand what this term means.

Either Ted Cruz is a original-intent Constitutionalist and therefore ineligible to be President or he is a living-document Constitutionalist and eligible to be President.
It is one or the other, but it can’t be both.

I haven’t had to go thru a security clearance since the early 1960s when there was no such thing as ‘dual citizenship.’ Back then, to become an American citizen you had to renounce any other citizenship.

In those days the Q would have been: are you an American citizen? Only a Y/N answer was possible. Nowadays, I suppose they ask if you are also a citizen of any other country(ies), and what country(ies) that would be if you answered ‘yes.’

But isn’t the story that Cruz never knew he was a dual American-Canadian citizen until he started his presidential quest? And then renounced the Canadian citizenship? I thought I’d read somewhere that he didn’t know that status. But what do I know? I can’t follow all this, gets too mired down.

Yes, that is the case.

Which isn't surprising. If you're parents never brought up your dual citizenship when you were a kid, it isn't likely that you'd have given the issue much thought.

Sure, you were born in Calgary, Alberta but, so what? You were an American citizen, just like the kids born to military families overseas.
