A police operation cleared people from the area around the Sydney Opera House on Thursday afternoon and caused the cancellation of the Manly ferry service.
Police confirmed the operation but no further information was immediately available.
It is understood the operation was not related to terrorism.
The 1.20pm ferry from Manly to Circular Quay had been cancelled due to the operation, according to a Department of Transport spokeswoman.

The Guardian is saying this. No other news source I have seen is saying that - I am monitoring sources here in Australia as well as I can - we have two local 24 hour television news services - Sky News Australia which is reporting on this but doesn't have much in terms of detail. ABC News 24 doesn't even seem to be covering it at this point. Hopefully it isn't terrorism, but this is Australia's most iconic building and a significant target for anybody trying to attract attention.
