Pro-Cruz super PAC rips Rubio on immigration and national security in new ad

A pro-Ted Cruz super PAC is out with a searing new TV ad invoking ISIS and the San Bernardino terrorist attacks and suggesting that Marco Rubio's efforts to pass an immigration reform bill are imperiling national security.

The commercial, from the group Stand for Truth, is the latest in a series of anti-Rubio ads that have homed in on the Florida senator's work on the so-called Gang of Eight bill, a bipartisan 2013 effort to pass immigration legislation through the Senate.

"We are at war - not just abroad, but here at home. With the clear and present threat of Islamic terrorism on the march, we must secure our borders," says the ad, which then cuts to TV news footage of the San Bernardino attacks and images of the two suspects involved in the massacre, before cutting to a shot of ISIS fighters.

"But Washington continues to fail us with groups like the Gang of Eight that support amnesty and allow sanctuary cities," says the voiceover, as the screen cuts to a shot of Rubio standing alongside New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, a Democratic co-sponsor of the bill. "We need a president who knows that border security is national security. America need Ted Cruz, the one proven conservative for president."

A Rubio spokesman, Alex Conant, responded: "This ad is an absurd rewrite of recent history that Cruz's support for giving legal status to illegal immigrants. When Marco is president there will be no amnesty and we will secure the border."

Stand for Truth is spending over $1 million in Iowa to air the ad, which goes into rotation on Wednesday. The group, one of a number of pro-Cruz super PACs, has reserved more than $2 million in TV airtime in the state.

It is the latest in a string of super PAC ads that have gone after Rubio on immigration. On Wednesday, another pro-Cruz group, Keep the Promise, will begin running an online ad highlighting the Gang of Eight and tying Rubio to Schumer and President Barack Obama. On Monday, a pro-Jeb Bush super PAC, Right to Rise, began airing a TV ad portraying Rubio as a "weathervane" on immigration.

Good move. Conservatives who are still thinking Rubes is a Tea Party conservative need to be warned and unite behind Cruz.

I saw Rubio yesterday on Fox News, talking close to the speed of light on ways he did the right thing when he was a gang-of-eighter.

It made me dizzy and want to barf all at the same time.
