A more likely answer is that the self-appointed censors missed the widespread slavery in “Star Wars” because they tend to think that slavery was a uniquely American institution. It wasn’t. Slavery was ubiquitous and constant throughout human history until the 19th century (and it survives in some corners of the world today). What was unique about American slavery was American hypocrisy. A country founded on human equality and inalienable rights should have been the last place where humans could be held as property.

How about Islam? 600 million female slaves. Right now. 2016. Happy New Year to all you people who are property of Islamic slave masters.

A droid may be “sentient” in the sense that it recognizes Self, but since it was created by Man, it has no soul. One could not, therefore, “murder” a droid in the legal sense, nor do droids have the innate, inalienable rights with which humans are endowed at birth.

They are machines. Very sophisticated machines, to be sure, but machines nonetheless. You can no more enslave one than you can enslave your toaster.

> Of course the wicked Sith probably would have tried to assassinate her wherever she was just to push Anakin over the edge.

ah yes the Obama staged shooting method. Obtain a list of young males with emotional problems on psychotropic meds then humiliate them or antagonize them (online after you determine where they hang out what user names they live online under; no problem at all for the NSA) and plant suggestions, ensure they get access to a gun or are in a home where the parents own guns and BOOM...there it is...

your toaster is enslaved.

mine hasn’t moved from it’s spot on the counter in literally years. the toaster knows it’s place

it actually likes it. it is plugged in and gets all the juice it needs

What about the Clone Army?

What happens if a clone “soldier” deserts from the army or refuses to fight unless he gets more paid more?

The Bounty Hunter who supplied the DNA for the Clone Army is not a slave.

He owns his own spacecraft and can come and go to any place in that galaxy any time he pleases.

Once again - why aren’t his clones slaves?

> Goldberg was just pointing how certain liberals, who take everything seriously and always look for problems where there aren't any, might make an issue out of the "slave" androids. It was a satirical take.

I'm pretty sure most of us got that. I knew he was just making a point.

So what if a Droid is a living being?

If we are their creator, then they have only the rights we assign to them.

Now if we merely copied or modified the Creator’s design, then a case can be made that they have innate rights from the Creator. But if it’s totally our design from the start, they exist at our pleasure.

Droids are very complex tools that behave exactly as they are programmed to.

The real slavery in Star Wars was in the old Republic. The Empire abolished it.

First off, great screen name --
Second, I won't be the first to have said it but Roy Batty's soliloquy were the most "emotional" words in "Blade Runner".

By Jonathan Last's logic and projections, he and many of us are slaves. I remember when loyalty was a positive trait. But what the hell do I know anymore.

How do these folks come up with this crap?

Yale University is reportedly doing away with the term "master" for some administrators because of its supposedly troubling connotations.

No one who attends Yale achieves a mastery of any skill these days except mental masturbation.

Those looking for slavery and slave traders in the Star Wars universe will find them (young Darth Vader, his mama, Princess Leia...)

How much is fair wage to pay your car or automated coffee maker every week?

How much is fair wage to pay the robots that replaced humans on assembly lines and do they get retirement packages or are they simply sold off as scrap metal when their work is done?

You can no more enslave one than you can enslave your toaster.

I'm sure there are social-justice types somewhere working up a good tantrum over that, too.

Now I feel very guilty that I make a bar of soap clean my rump; do I have the right to do that?

As long as the soap has not been carved into the shape of any sentient life form by some old guy named Geppetto, then you're okay.
