Time to call in the heavies.
I’ve never heard it put that way before. Brilliant, and accurate. Any time I go into a new-to-me mall, I look for low-rent storefronts and what I used to call “head shops.”
But I do recall seeing “African Art” stores in most of the bad ones. Very observant.
St. Matthews is not the only one locally having problems with flash mobs. A new high end mall opened in Simpsonville, Ky and was very soon hit by a flash mob, this was only 2 or 3 weeks before St. Matthews and roughly 20 miles away. They posted police and security which promptly broke out into a fist fight between the mall saviors. Just this week I went to our local Walmart and was surprised to see 7 State Police cars parked on the sidewalk at the front door. Apparently they had a tip and were heading it off before something happened. These are a first for the area that I am aware of.
Malls have been slow to protect themselves in my area. A big mall southeast of Pittsburgh — once the crown jewel of malls in the area — is now a shell of its former self. Last I heard, a developer was going to convert most of the property into office space.
The owners have to understand that if law abiding citizens think a mall is unsafe, customers will stay away in droves.
Really? I'd say they are most likely smokingfrog assholes.
The emergency room was like that bar scene in the original Star Wars! It was a real close-up view of the city's underclass. Fortunately, I have a hotel affinity card, the emergency ward police got me a reliable cab driver, and I was brought to safety. That involved getting to a hotel in the airport area!
What's my point? I'd wager not many residents ever saw how bad that seamy side of the city had become. I'm surprised it didn't explode over the summer.
From Newport News Virginia, there's this.
Police: Multiple fights break out at Patrick Henry Mall
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A large fight broke out at Patrick Henry Mall on Jefferson Avenue Saturday night, according to Newport News Police.
A department spokesman told WAVY.com "several fights involving teens" were reported around 5:15 p.m. Officers arrived shortly after that and started ushering the unaccompanied kids off mall property.
A 17-year-old female was punched in the face during the fighting, but police say she refused treatment.
Witnesses on the scene told WAVY that a group of around 50 to 60 kids and small groups began fighting near the mall's food court. They described the scene at the mall as complete chaos.
Police say the crowd involved in the fight was estimated to be around 200. Officers on the scene saw several fights involving what appeared to be teenagers.
Shopper Jasmine Washington said, "It was groups of fights. It wasn't just like one-on-one types of fights. It was like riots." Despite the police activity, the mall never closed, but officers reported "severe traffic congestion" around 6:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Police say they received no reports of an active shooter or shots fired on mall property. There were also no arrests made following Saturday's fights.
Police Spokesman Lou Thurston says there will be an increased police presence at the mall on Sunday.
10 On Your Side's Matt Gregory is on the scene at the mall. Look for his full report on WAVY News 10 at 11.
Malls and movie theaters are on the way out. People will go to work and supermarkets and order on line and watch movies on line.
For one mall in my area (not far from Newark & Paterson, NJ), the writing was on the wall when a tattoo parlor filled one of the many vacant spaces. I’m probably there less than once a year, and noticed over the last couple of visits that many of the “shoppers” were foreigners who didn’t seem to be buying anything (almost like they were visiting a museum from America’s long-past heyday).
It will stop when you also lock up the parents
“The alternative is for shoppers to flee elsewhere with the result that the mall will be forced to close down and be razed.”............
It has happened in more than one mall across this country. Let the animals out of the zoo and they go wild.
Back in the 1990's, one of the marketing staff told me to watch for chinese restaurants, mexican restaurants and tattoo parlors (in that order) as the handy guide to "getting the hell out of Dodge." It was sort of a running joke within the family for a couple years, but it came to have a dismal ring of truth.
I've been eschewing enclosed malls for well over ten years now, and the rare visits never enhance my view of society.

It will stop when you allow conceal carry. Even orcs are scared of armed civilians.
