Pope Francis says God opens heaven's doors to non-believers who "obey their conscience," shattering a widely-held assumption about Christian beliefs and reinforcing his image as the most progressive pontiff in history.
"You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don't believe and who don't seek the faith," Francis wrote Friday in an open letter published in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Francis was responding to questions from the paper's 91-year-old founder Eugenio Scalfari, reports Britain's The Independent.

Just in case you slept through that part of the Theology 101 class, Mr. Pope, He is God of everyone, everything, everywhere and of all time. As much as we Christians love and reverence Him, HE is far, far more than our sectarian diety, our team mascot.

The Pope is an idiot and ignorant of Christian doctrine, which he thinks began with him. Catholic doctrine has always held that those who cannot accept Chrisitanity - either because they have never been exposed to it or because it has been imperfectly presented to them - are in a state of invincible ignorance but can be saved through the merits of Jesus Christ if they adhere to natural law.
The natural law - which Bergoglio, good statist that he is, seems to reject - is engraved in the heart of man, and it is this to which he is actually referring when he says “conscience.” However, he is letting himself off the hook, because there is a whole cult, which I won’t dignify by calling islam a religion, where conscience means surrendering any human feeling or belief in order and law beyond your penis and the writings of the Arab supremacist lunatic Mohammed. He did nothing but worry about where he was going to put his penis next, and his big promise to his followers was that they’d get an ample supply of young women and boys to keep Mr. Happy happy.

The Pope has got to get real, as BXVI did in his questions about Islam. But that was precisely why they drove BXVI out of office and this current pope knows which side his bread is buttered on. Humble little brown shoes and all.
