Metal detectors stand in for real action on gun violence

The Happiest Place on Earth can only remain so by bracing against the possibility of children being mowed down by assault weapons as they await a turn on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster.

Walt Disney World, along with other major theme parks, just caved to the threat of a mass shooting.

Visitors recently were greeted with newly installed metal detectors or handheld wands at the entrance gates.

The theme parks have long patted bags, and security in the past has found visitors attempting to tote their guns along on their day of fun.

Well mary, the metal detectors (except for all those plastic guns) and maybe some large "NO FIREARMS ALLOWED" flashing signs at the entrance to the parking lot will ensure your safety. I mean with those kinds of security measures in place there's no doubt that those dedicated bad guys would seek out easier pickin's. Or not.

I have no problem with a property owner (Disney), exercising their right to determine who enters or does not enter their property, subject to two conditions:

1) there is clearly posted signage about their no guns policy

and

2) they assume full liability for any and all injuries that are the result of denying someone the right to defend themselves on their property.

These gadgets will make it only slightly more difficult for a dedicated terrorist to get weapons and explosives into the park. A mere bump in the road...

A mere bump in the road...

I think you nailed it.

Will Disney put enough security personnel on their property to stop bombers?

NO

“These gadgets will make it only slightly more difficult for a dedicated terrorist to get weapons and explosives into the park.”

A determined terrorist will first get a job at the target. He will learn the procedures and traps. Then he will bring in and preposition material. The Russian plane bombed over the Saini was brought down by an airport of airline employee.

The big park in San Antonio has been wanding the entrants for years due to trouble from the Mexican gang members.

Evidently, criminals and terrorists are not very impressed by signs.

Doh!

Two things come to mind:

The people stcaked up at "security" would be a target rich environment for a group of Amish thugs to shoot their way through on their way in.

Those same Amish thugs might just decide to come in over the back fence.

But, on the other hand, I just might be over thinking the whole thing.

That ain’t gonna happen.

How many victims in “gun free zones” have sued and won anything?

What’s to stop terrorists from beginning the carnage of the disarmed right at the line at the metal detectors and working their way victim by victim through them right on inside?

I don’t know how they’ve arranged the screening process.
However, if each worker entering the park is not screened, the process is useless.

Buknum.
Guns checks are just an excuse for the Disney Security people to check people’s bags to prevent you carrying in your own sandwiches and drinks instead of paying the ultra high prices for food bought inside.
I’ve known people who made sandwiches and hid them in the bottoms of diaper bags because the inside prices for food are so high!

They won't need to get into the park. Just think of the crowd backed up at the metal detectors and what an anti-personnel bomb could do at that point.

Theme parks are harder targets than you would first think. Most have armed security and likely already seen obvious potential targets.

What makes San Bernardino so unnerving is that it was not an obvious target. It had absolutely no significance other than it was a gathering of people. There were thousands of similar gatherings that same day across the nation. The fact that it can be hit by a very small, dedicated, guerrila cell, highlights the vulnerablity of a free society.

You are less vulnerable in a guarded venue like a park or stadium than a random restaurant or office. Which is why constitutional carry is so important. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are unlikely to identify a target beforehand, all we can do is decrease the enemy’s likelihood of success by fighting back on scene.

The theme parks have long patted bags,

Well I don't know about patting bags, but in Anaheim they look into purses and backpacks and as far as I know that has always in the past been to keep alcohol and other substances out of the park, quite unsuccessfully.

Decades ago when they did it at my grad night there was still so much booze and pot, especially pot being used in the park that it was joke.
