King County Superior Court upheld legislation allowing the City of Seattle to tax gun and ammunition sales, according to documents released on Tuesday.
Seattle City Council unanimously approved the "Gun and Violence Tax" in August; it charges $25 for every firearm legally sold in Seattle.
In addition to the 2 to 5 cents added to sales of certain types of ammunition, it would owners require reporting lost or stolen guns within 24 hours of their disappearance.
The City Budget Office estimates the gun violence tax will raise between $300,000 and $500,000 a year to be used for gun violence research and prevention programs.
Owners of the two gun shops in the city, along with the National Rifle Association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation, challenged the ordinance in court earlier in December.

Just go outside of Seattle to buy firearms and/or ammo.
I guess this all but puts any Seattle gun shops out of business.
Add me, please?
By design.
I wonder if the court would approve a tax on abortions?
It’s but a short drive to the city limits.
City gun and ammo dealers should close down and move out of the city.
Deprive them of the money paid for licenses, taxes, etc.
” And so it begins...”
Prior to 1937 there was an 11% tax on firearms and ammo that went straight to the federal kitty.
Like Baynative says, this will put Seattle gun shops out of business.
Probably their intention all along.
This does nothing but hurt the poor family mom/dad looking to defend their family.
Pathetic that a court can rule this way.
So by this ligic - can we tax gay bars and shops to pay for HIV treatments
I think I recall reading that there were only one or two “gun shops” (businesses that sell guns exclusively) left within the city limits.
See tagline.
If the Washington State Supreme court doesn't overrule this on appeal, it's just another pure Bullshit liberal fiat.
No, that would be homophobic, silly.
That’s the case in most states. Same here in Minnesota.
No. By this logic, they would tax the establishments which cater solely to a straight clientelle.
It is highly unlikely that most of the legally sold firearms in Seattle are being used to commit violent crimes, therefore, taxing the straight bars for HIV would be the same logic.
“Prior to 1937 there was an 11% tax on firearms and ammo that went straight to the federal kitty.”
Still in effect today (though handguns are only 10%)
that’s a little dramatic for something that’s been going on in some way or form for many years now. What is exactly a study on gun violence? What happens has nothing to do with Obama’s sons having no mother or father. not going to school. And getting everybody pregnant. how can you ever get any good research done when the premise is flawed
