The âStar Warsâ universe was a fixture in Patten Anthonyâs childhood: He read the books, played the video games and caught the original movie trilogy when it aired on TV. Now at 29 years old, heâs especially excited that this weekâs release of Disneyâs âStar Wars: The Force Awakensâ prominently features Nigerian-British actor John Boyega, whose appearance in the movie's trailers suggests heâll play a pivotal role in the story.
âWhen I saw a black man with a light saber, I got a little hyped,â said Anthony, an African-American resident of Atlanta who works in information technology. âAt first I thought, theyâre just throwing us a bone â I didnât realize that [Boyega] is a main character. Itâs nice to see some people of color in leading roles."

I love Denizel Washington in "Deja Vu", which was excellent science fiction.
He is also fantastic in the numerous fantasy roles in which he stared, such as "Book of Eli", and "Fallen", etc.
Will Smith was the star of "Independence day", which was a great movie, but I absolutely loved him in "I Robot."
Chiwetel Ejiofor was just about the most awesomest bad guy i've ever seen in a Sci-Fi movie. He combined sophistication and class, with awesome physical ability. I thought they should have caste him as James Bond. He would make an excellent Bond.
And who can forget Lawrence Fishburn as "Morpheus" in "The Matrix? Not the lead, but still a d@mn fine role.
Of Course, Vin Diesel ("Riddick") and "The Rock" ("Doom") are half black, but they have both done quite well as leading men in Sci-Fi roles.
And of course there is Samuel L. Jackson and Billy Dee Williams playing significant roles in Star Wars, but not really in leading roles.
I haven't seen the new Star Wars yet. I'll probably see it next week. I shall not be surprised to see a very excellent portrayal of the leading role by John Boyega.
I would like to go into occasions of other great black actors in leading science fiction roles but this message is long enough already.
I’m so ashamed. I’m such a horrible racist. I watched the whole movie - TWICE! - and never once gave a thought to the race of any of the characters.
What is my penance?
Let me know what to do as I made the same mistake you made. I paid no attention to race and fell in love with all of the new characters. I’m sure I’m heading to liberal hell for that.
I was watching that movie with my boyfriend of African heritage when Darth took off his helmet and we were waiting for James Earl Jones. We were both stunned when a white guy appeared.
The Rock is hot.
So what if one of the main characters in Star Wars is black? who gives a shit? Democrats do. Then they manufacture a controversy to “prove” how racist we are.
I am so sick of this shit.
Luke and Leia are white...why would their father be black?
I knew it was one of the Fett brothers.
Maybe that is because we are constantly bombarded with racial politics from the Left. Hour after hour, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year......that is all we hear. "Black Lives Matter!" How about "The Knock Our Game." Or "Flash Mob Robberies." Or lies from supposed witnesses in high profile police shootings. Or rioting and burning down square city blocks based on lies. Or Affirmative Action destroying the very concept of Equal Protection Under the Law. Or a "President" that was unqualified who has ruined our nation, acted lawlessly, committed treason, and yet he cannot be held accountable "because of race."
Not to mention the crime statistics:
Look, I'll go see the movie and I hope I enjoy it more than the last three Star Wars clinkers from Lucas. Those movies were pretty terrible.
But people should not give us this "Whatsammataah? You lookin' at race of the characters!" garbage. Of course we look at race all the time now, even in entertainment. Our colorblind society does not exist even in fantasy land any longer, and race has been used as a wedge by the Left as a club 24/7/365 in every single aspect of our lives.
So spare me.
But their LEADER is Black!
He was - and head of the Jedi Council....
We plan on seeing the latest and are watching the first 6 episodes at home (wife borrowed the set from a friend).
Ok, that’s funny right there!
Lol
As they said in the movie: they went in for taking kids at a young age and training them — Kylo Ren says that they should take clones. Probably they lost the cloning facilities.
bump
Good article.
Yeah man but in the end...he was put down by THE MAN, sheeeeeit.
