A controlled explosion in the luggage hold of an aircraft was successfully contained by a bomb-proof lining developed by an international team of scientists. The technology shows how a plane's luggage hold may be able to contain the force of an explosion if a device hidden in an item of luggage detonates.
The Fly-Bag is made from multiple layers of fabrics and composites that have high strength and impact, and heat resistance. The fabrics include Aramid, a heat-resistant and strong synthetic fiber used in the aerospace industry, as well as in ballistic body armor.

...but do you think they can get the terrorists to use them?
Fashion them into burqas...
There was a story about this new stuff on Cable TV the other day.
The problem is that the industry says that it makes luggage “Fly Bag” to heavy and would lessen the amount of luggage that an airline could carry.
How many pounds of HE does it take to defeat a pound of fly-bag?
Sounds like something from a Dale Brown novel.
Unless they are going to evacuate the air from your luggage, this is a non-starter. The volume/energy of the explosion has to go somewhere.
It can get redirected inward but that could create a black hole and that would cause other problems.
The key is how much weight does it add. Weight is dollars which impact the bottom line. Pun intended.
That’s funny. I had a solution to the oil spill problem, but it was more of a containment thing. Along the rails of the ship, a one piece inflatable oil boom is housed in a container. Upon a spill, the boom gets launched to form a 50 foot barrier around the ship.
While it may not stop a million barrels, it can possibly contain a small spill.
You just blew my mind!
What if they used a “half bag” (inverted U-shape) that was capable of directing the explosion out the belly of the aircraft. The stronger layers protecting the passengers and inner workings/fuel tanks/hydraulics of the plane?
Just a thought.
