Actor James Woods survives multi-car wreck on icy Glenwood Canyon portion of I-70 in Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - Actor James Woods says God and his Jeep saved him from a near-catastrophic pileup in Colorado.

The 68-year-old actor and six other drivers wrecked in the Glenwood Canyon portion of I-70 on Monday.

Woods recounted the crash, which nearly sent him over a cliff, in more than a dozen tweets.

He wrote another man was driving 75 mph on icy roads and spun out. According to Woods, he hit a wall trying to avoid the other vehicle, and spun in the opposite direction going 60 mph.

"Huge drop 100 feet into river below, but the guardrail held. I managed to pull out and slide down out of oncoming traffic," he tweeted.

According to Post Independent, CDOT confirmed a multiple-vehicle wreck happened near the Hanging Lake exit.

Woods adds he did not hit another vehicle but did hit the wall hard. No one died but some of the people involved were hurt. Woods said he suffered a concussion, and apologized for "rambling."

"I was in my 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee. That Jeep saved my life. An old tank."

The Academy Award nominee repeatedly praised the emergency responders, tow truck driver and people in Glenwood Springs for coming to his aid. He thanked each EMT by name and shared his tow truck driver's phone number, saying he's the best in town.

"I can't say enough about the lovely people of Glenwood Springs, CO and nearby who were so kind."

Woods tweeted Tuesday, as the storm rolled through eastern Colorado, that he was "on the road again."

Woods has been nominated for two Oscars for Salvador and Ghosts of Mississippi, and has won Emmy Awards and Golden Globes.

Glad he survived. Beautiful area. Went through there just recently late at night the day after Thanksgiving. Snow was coming at the Jeep in such a way (directly) that it made visibility very difficult. Felt like the scene out of 2001 where Dave is going through all the psychedelic space stuff. We've had a lot of snow in the Denver Metro since last night. I guess Glenwood Springs did, too. No way one would wanting to be speeding through the canyon at regular speeds with icy conditions.

That’s the cardinal problem with icy roads. You can be as careful as you want to be, but it only takes that one out of control idiot to ruin your life.

Shouldn’t be going 60 on an icy road.

A couple of hours soaking in the hot springs there will do him and his buddies a world of good.

He's leans our political direction decidedly.

You would probably know him if you saw him

Thanks, beaversmom. I’m glad you made it safely through.

That is one of the most spectacular drives in the whole country. They did an amazing job on the new highway through the canyon.

I was always afraid of a big rock coming down and smashing the car. I’d drive with my hands on the lower part of the steering wheel in case a rock came through the windshield. LOL

I think Woods is one of the good guys.

We get mosquito swarms like that down on the coast.

I *like* retro stuff. Mine is just a regular Jeep Cherokee (2001). Has WaY over 200K on it. Not pretty to look at, at this point, but knock on wood (those side panels of the Jeep in your pic) that it holds out for a while longer.

Have 2, a 96 with 300,000 and a 98 with 190,000. The straight 6 in the old Jeep Cherokees is an awesome engine.
