LOS ANGELES (AP) - The latest on the closure of Los Angeles Unified School District schools due to a threat (all times local):

9:40 a.m.

New York City officials say they and many cities across the country received the same threat that closed the Los Angeles school system.

Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters Tuesday that the threat came in the form of a "generic" email and that New York officials quickly concluded that it wasn't credible.

Los Angeles Unified School District officials say they closed all of the system's more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools as a precaution.

A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said the threat involved bombs in students' backpacks. The official wasn't authorized to speak about an ongoing investigation and insisted on anonymity.

District spokeswoman Shannon Haber says the threat was emailed to a school board member late Monday.

So New York and other cities get the same threat and it's business as usual.

A lot of schools already require that backpacks be made of see-thru mesh or clear vinyl.

..the threat involved bombs in students' backpacks

This is where profiling would come in handy. Only a certain portion of the students would be likely to bring in bombs in their backpacks.

Terrorists, real ones that is, don’t make ‘threats’. They act then claim responsibility, either immediately before or after the fact.

They now know all they really have to do is make some anonymous phone calls, here and there.

Where next? Universities and colleges? Shopping malls? Churches? Sports events? The SuperBowl and Playoffs just a month away................

The actual jihadis don’t make specific warnings when they actually attack, they just attack and claim credit afterwards. These sorts of warnings are to harass and wear down our defenses. Yelling wolf is a strategy as well as a hobby for teenage boys.

Would like to know which other cities received the threat. The collective IQ of the LA school board is below 100.

“They now know all they really have to do is make some anonymous phone calls, here and there.”

All they need to do make identical threats to multiple locations and carry it out in a place that ignores it. Voila! Terrorism is more of a mind-f#*k than an actual body count.

Sounds like the towel heads are going to have a lot more fun with the L.A. idiots. This was clearly a test. I have friends in the NYPD and they are the best there is.

I’m in full support of the L.A. School Super....I would want to know that people are looking out for my children and grandchildren, especially after what happened in San Berndino...and the rumors they were on their way to a school...

New York has never been on the ball...even the World Trade center bombing the first time didn’t make them wake up...

GOOD JOB SUPER!!!

I submit for your perusal, one of the reasons that NYC Police Commissioner Bratton realized that there was no “credible” threat and that no action was necessary. Allah was not capitalized in the e-mail and no jihadist would ever be guilty of that. No, I’m not kidding.

Our lives are hanging on the perception of professional idiots.

640,000 students. I wonder how many of them ended up walking home without adult supervision?

One of them has already been hit and killed by a semi, apparently on his way back home. A boy, 17, Figueroa and 21st or thereabouts, I gather.

The solution may be clear plastic backpacks. Of course, they could still sneak in something disguised as a book.

Oh my, how sad. I wonder if the increased pedestrian traffic during what would normally be school hours led to that.
