Trump, Cruz Lead GOP Field; Support for Carson Plummets, Poll Finds
The Wall Street Journal ^ | December 13, 2015 | Janet Hook

Donald Trump has risen to a new high and Ben Carson’s support has plummeted among Republican primary voters after a tumultuous month of international and domestic terrorism, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.

Mr. Trump leads the Republican field with 27% support, taking over the top position from Mr. Carson, who led in a late October Journal/NBC News survey.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has vaulted into second place, amid signs that he has picked up former Carson supporters. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida placed third in the survey, but the poll also carried evidence that he stands to benefit most when the big field of GOP candidates is winnowed.

Mr. Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, dropped to fourth place, with 11% support, down from 29% in late October. As terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., heightened attention to national security in the past month, Mr. Carson has stumbled on foreign policy questions, and critics have raised doubts about his mastery of international affairs.

Many here said at the time that it was inexplicable why Trump went after Carson—

He had Carson and Cruz spitting a vote- now, it’s virtually all gone to Cruz, as would be expected.

What's your point? Are you possibly unclear on the difference between a national poll and an Iowa poll?

He went after Carson because Carson was #2 and the immediate threat. You get rid of the target in front of you. Same reason he’s now going after Cruz, and if Cruz falls, same reason he’ll go after whoever replaces Cruz. Don’t waste fire on #3.

I’ve never been to an Iowa caucus, but IIRC, that operation depends on how efficient your organizers are. IOW, you MUST turn your people out.

uh no, that's why I asked the question first, and then merely made a very circumspect guess.....

Kind of an effective bloc/triangle of voters involved. Carson's voters naturally gravitate to Cruz and some to trump as Carson declines and whoever is last standing between Cruz and Trump will get a huge boost from the other's camp...

I would call Iowa a toss up between Cruz and Trump but who knows Carson might win. Iowa is a screwy place.

I kind of doubt you were a Trump supporter at any time. However, if Trump criticizing Cruz moves you to Cruz, more power to you. You might consider Hillary too, Trump is going after her big time.

Trump has had no influence on Cruz’s numbers and (so far) has barely played patty-cake with him.

Everything still going very well for the insurgency.

Trump, Cruz or lose.

Carson was no threat— you know that. The media was taking him down. Carson would have faded by his own devices.

All Trump accomplished was to alienate Carson voters. They didn’t split, they went to Cruz— You know, I said that at the time. Cruz is at the top of the pact in Iowa because Trump went after Carson on a personal level.

And yes, he’s doing the same thing today with Cruz. On Fox, he called him “a bit of a maniac”-— personal attack.

One can’t attack other candidates on a personal level, and then expect to acquire their supporters.

The image Trump is creating is that he will insult friend and foe alike-— and as the polls are indicating— people respect Donald for many things, but they don’t believe he has the right temperament to be president.

You are right.

Newt was supposedly way ahead in Dec 2011 by the same far left rag poll
and Rick S. was in last place !

Rick S won ! http://articles.latimes.com/2011/dec/03/news/la-pn-iowa-poll-20111203

So how inaccurate is this poll every election cycle then why is Drudge blaring its usual way off results ?

Trump 27, Cruz 22.
But the poll was only 400 pubbies - how can this mean anything? And aren’t WSJ and NBC anti-Trump and anti-Cruz?
Tuesday’s debate will be great!
