Yale Lecturer Resigns After Email on Halloween Costumes [Another one bites the dust]

A Yale lecturer who came under attack for challenging students to stand up for their right to decide what Halloween costumes to wear, even to the point of being offensive, has resigned from teaching at the college, the university said Monday.

The lecturer, Erika Christakis, an expert in early childhood education, wrote an email in October suggesting that there could be negative consequences to students ceding "implied control" over Halloween costumes to institutional forces. "I wonder, and I am not trying to be provocative: Is there no room anymore for a child or young person to be a little bit obnoxious,” she wrote, "a little bit inappropriate or provocative or, yes, offensive?"

She wrote the email in response to a directive from the Intercultural Affairs Committee at Yale that warned students that it would be insensitive to wear costumes that symbolized cultural appropriation or misrepresentation, or both, like feathered headdresses, turbans, war paint, blackface or redface, or costumes that made fun of people.

Ms. Christakis has made a "voluntary decision not to teach in the future," according to a statement from the university on Monday. Her husband, Dr. Nicholas Christakis, a physician and a professor of sociology at Yale, will take a one-semester sabbatical, the university said. The statement said the administration hoped Ms. Christakis would reconsider.

"Erika Christakis is a well-regarded instructor, and the university's leadership is disappointed that she has chosen not to continue teaching in the spring semester," the statement said. "Her teaching is highly valued and she is welcome to resume teaching anytime at Yale, where freedom of expression and academic inquiry are the paramount principle and practice."

Ms. Christakis's email, combined with an overheard "white girls only" remark at a fraternity party, helped touch off protests over racial insensitivity at Yale,

You lose your job for opinions, and you have no recourse. It’s 100% obvious that there is no free speech in this country.

I guess she didn't like being thrown under the bus by administration and also having to continue teaching such bullies as the #BLM crowd.

Liberals eating their own.

Free speech doesn’t mean say anything without consequences from anyone. It means the government cannot put you in jail for speech.

Since She is a parent of three teenagers, I won't say more than these poor kids having to grow up controlled by this.

She is right, there is no more room for anyone, even a child on Halloween, to even appear to be evening hinting at being offensive.

What I bet she doesn’t yet see is she helped to create the environment she is now fallen victim to.

Liberals eating their own.

Probably true.

But she was gotten rid of for saying - "Hey, maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but doesn't anyone remember something....it could possibly have been this, don't hold me to it.... but if it doesn't offend anyone too AWFULLY much, I just thought that I might tentatively and with the utmost of respect mention that .... America still has a little bit - not much, but a little bit - of Freedom of Speech, if it's OK with all of you for me to say so."

And The Powers That Be at Yale snuffed out that faint glimmer of hope as quickly as possible. Liberalism is a jealous and intolerant God.

She asked the question.

Yale answered it for her.

The answer to her question is apparently, “No.”

This academic comrade committed thoughtcrime. She forgot that offensive dress, whether costume or everyday wear, is hate crime as well. Furthermore, in urging the students to think for themselves, she had committed the crime of common sense.

“All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. ‘Reality control,’ they called it; in Newspeak, ‘doublethink.’ ...that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed. Even to understand the word ‘doublethink’ involved the use of doublethink.” (Part 1, Chapter 3)

The worst part is that most of her comrade peers are liberal thinkers and may remember independent thought. This instructor was insane and unable to control herself. She should have been forced to go on university closed circuit television and confess her crimes in order to serve as an example to her peers.

I doubt it was truly voluntary.

How is she part of it?

She has been a member of academia that has for years pushed this politically correct mantra. I am willing to bet she habeen pushing liberal ideals in her classroom for years.

Political Correctness is what made her comments controversial, causing her to feel the need to step down as penance for the sin of sugg sting PC has gone too far.

In other words, you have nothing in particular to bring against her, any more than you would have against, oh, Mike Adams or Victor Davis Hanson.

100% fact-free.

I am reminded of when members of the Grand Orient Freemasonry of the lodge in Los Gatos, CA traipsed down the street during the annual Christmas Parade... in full Arab regalia.

Can I be offended too?

Somebody should dress their little girl in a burkha and flash the homeowners as a suicide bomber and see how the liberals react.

Are you telling me this particular Yale academic is outside the mainstream in academia and is not one off the Liberal Indoctrination Activists?

If so, then I missed judged her.
