After Months of Lying in Wait and Watching Rivals, Ted Cruz Sees Payoff in Polls
NYTimes ^ | 12/8/15 | Matt Flagenheimer

Hours after Ted Cruz announced his presidential candidacy last March at an evangelical university, his team openly cheered his meager position in the polls, where his support registered at around 5 percent. "You have to own a base in the Republican primary," the campaign manager, Jeff Roe, said then. "If you own the base, then you can grow it."

Less than nine months later ..many of them spent drafting behind his rivals, lying in wait .. Mr. Cruz's base of support has swelled, forcing his foes to grapple with the central premise of Mr. Cruz's bid, a bet many had long dismissed: that he could emerge as the first far-right conservative in recent political history with the strength to withstand a bruising primary.

For weeks, polls have shown Mr. Cruz climbing both nationally and, more decisively, in Iowa, where a Monmouth University survey on Monday placed him first, with 24 percent support among likely Republican caucusgoers. Donald J. Trump was second at 19 percent. (Another poll, by CNN, gave Mr. Trump a solid lead, despite gains by Mr. Cruz.)

Mr. Cruz, who had more cash on hand than any other campaign as of Sept. 30, boasts on the trail that the traditional primary script has been flipped:

If as reported, Trump’s proposal would keep out Muslims who are US citizens seeking to reduce-enter the country, he would be stopped by practically any judge.

Pulling for Ted—big time.

Will settle for Trump if necessary.

No to the rest.

I must give credit to Matt Flegenheimer and Nick Corasaniti for a good article. It’s thoughtful and factual, well researched and respectful with a minimum of snark. It’s not the usual biased drivel or an attempt to sow discord between GOP candidates we’ve come to expect from the NYT when covering Republicans.

Its part of a larger 'surging candidate' meme designed by the GOPe/MSM cabal to stop Donald Trump.

The same Monmouth poll had Doc Carson surging in South Carolina almost one week before the last debate as well.

Lets see what Cruz can do with the push he's getting...I'll wager he gets on the Sunday shows this weekend.

Agreed. I got a bit carried away. No to Carson and especially Rubio, that little turncoat. Besides, his ears are too big, and that alone is reason not to vote for him. We’ve had too many years of old Dumbo Ears and what has that gotten us.

Rand Paul is a good man IMO.

I am torn on this at this point.

I believe Cruz to be overall more conservative.

But.

I believe Trump is the only one capable of overcoming internal RINO opposition.

I hope the race is decided by the time things get to Texas, because I am just not sure which way to go.

“If as reported, Trump’s proposal would keep out Muslims who are US citizens seeking to reduce-enter the country, he would be stopped by practically any judge.”

The Supreme Court blessed Roosevelt’s incarceration of tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans, and I don’t think “any” judge has the Constitutional authority to extend Constitutional rights to people living in every country on earth.

It is too bad for Cruz’s supporters that Cruz finally tipped his hand on immigration.

Can’t defend Cruz so slander his supporters. Yep, that really solves Cruz’s timidity on Muslim immigration.

Not the same thing and there is no way any judge would stand for US citizens not being able to return to the IS without due process.

Cruz didn’t tip anything except perhaps expose trump’s disregard for the rule of law.

Could you cite the law that Trump wants to violate. This has got to be good.
