Senate passes budget bill repealing Obamacare, defunding Planned Parenthood

Washington (CNN)The Senate Thursday approved on a largely party line vote a budget bill that would repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood, two top priorities of Republicans who control the chamber.

Not to be outdone, Democrats seized the debate to try to force votes on gun control legislation that could put some Republicans in a politically tough position as the country is reeling from a recent spate of mass shootings.

Worst mass shootings in U.S. 17 photos: Worst mass shootings in U.S. By voting to nullify Obamacare -- the signature domestic accomplishment of the Obama administration -- GOP congressional leaders fulfilled a longtime pledge to voters and rank-and-file members to get a repeal to President Barack Obama's desk, even though he will veto it.

The bill would also cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood, the women's health group that provides abortions and has long under GOP scrutiny. Republicans' passions to cutoff taxpayer dollars to the organization increased in recent months when videos were released that purported to show Planned Parenthood executives selling the tissue of aborted fetuses to researchers.

While the House and Senate have voted scores of times to repeal portions of Obamacare, this was the first time they are using a special tool known as "budget reconciliation" that allow the measure to clear the Senate with just 51 votes instead of the 60 votes typically required for major legislation. That higher threshold has allowed Democrats to block all past repeal efforts.

By steering these hot-button issues into reconciliation bill, Republican leaders also steered them away from separate must-pass government funding bill Congress is dealing with now known as the omnibus. Had those controversial issues been included in that bill, it would have made even harder to pass before the December 11 deadline when government could shut down.

I know exactly where that pen should be inserted — but it would probably just rattle around in there.

He has a pen and a phone and I don’t have to say where I’d want him to stick both!

Meaningless.

They can’ even do the 90-10 vote against the Cadillac tax on a separate bill, they had to tack onto this failure as amendment. All for show, they aren’t serious about actually fixing anything.

The easy fix is drop the mandate. Who could vote against that and be re-elected? Those who want to keep Obamacare or be forever stuck with Medicaid will have inferior health care and be slaves to the government.

Any other approach means one thing. They want to save both Obamacare and their jobs.

Well, except for the fact that poll have poll following shootings doesn't show any support for increased gun control.

Great first step. Next step is to restart real budget consideration by the House. Not the "continuing resolutions" that allow the jug eared buffoon to claim the the GOP wants to shut down the government.

I’ve not had HC insurance since Jan 1 2014 because I refuse to submit to tyrant. It is my red line. Our founding fathers would have been shooting by now.

This is the ‘show vote’ that Ted Cruz said would come separately in place of being attached to the must-pass highway bill.

Meanwhile, the highway bill sails through with a rider to reinstitute the crony capitalist Ex-Im Bank.

This is how the GOPe operates.

I have Medicare Part A, which is a "given" when you reach age 65 with 40 work quarters credit. I'm self-insured for the rest.

I wouldn't recommend that approach for most people. I'm into natural healing and nutritional/life style choices, so don't have the expenses for pharmaceuticals and doctor visits that most people have.

LOL! That was a good one.

I have a theory that the reason the Dims and the MSM make such a big deal out of a potential government shutdown is if one occurs that lasts 6 months and no one notices then small government is very possible. A bunch of people might notice and wake the hell up. But that will never happen because the public is by and large brainwashed or just plain damn stupid.

Same here. My wife and I are 62. We are careful with our diet and lifestyle. I haven’t seen a dr. in years. I also don’t eat big Macs. ;-)
