Madness: Amid Refugee Crisis, EU Willing to Fast-Track Turkish Membership

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet DavutoÄŸlu is one happy man. The reason is that the European Union is set to give in to every single one of his country's demands in order to do something about the refugee crisis.

The EU wants Turkey to stem the refugee flow into Europe by taking care of them in Turkey. In return, Turkey wants 3 billion euros (around $3.2 billion US) in extra aid, visa-free traveling for Turks in EU-countries, and a re-launch of EU-accession talks. In other words: Turkey demands fast-track membership:

"Today is a historic day in our accession process to the EU," DavutoÄŸlu told reporters on arrival for the talks, in which EU leaders will offer Turkey cash, visa-free travel to Europe and re-launching of accession talks in exchange for Ankara's help in stemming the flood of migrants to the EU.

"With EU leaders today we will be sharing the destiny of our continent, global challenges of the economic crisis as well as regional geopolitical challenges in front of us, including migration issues," DavutoÄŸlu said.

This is lunacy. Not only is Turkey currently involved in a serious crisis and trade war with Russia, the country's authorities are also arresting journalists on a scale never seen before. At least not in a free and democratic country. A few days ago, two journalists of Cumhuriyet were arrested because they had the audacity to report on a truck filled with weapons that was traveling from Turkey to Syria. These weapons were in all likelihood going to radical Islamic groups fighting the Assad regime. When Cumhuriyet pointed that out, they were accused of "treason" and are now threatened with years imprisonment.

Another Turkish columnist has been told he faces up to five years and four months in prison for "insulting" President Erdogan...

An argument could be made that denying Turkey EU membership to date has forced them to look east, has radicalized the country, and has elected Erdogan. I just put it out there for debate. The other side of the argument is that Turkey has progressed so far down the road to Islamicization that it is beyond recovery. And then there is the obvious corruption to profit off the misery of a terrorist organization.

The change necessary is getting them the hell out of NATO. They are on the dark side now. If they pull something crazy with Russia (like they already did)...WE are signed up to go to war with Russia AUTOMATICALLY as a part of NATO. Our only saving grace at the moment is the passivist jerk we have at the helm who ignores law and treaties.

We are not signed up to go to war automatically. Turkey was not attacked, and any proportionate counterattack to Turkey's aggression would not apply. Article 5 is a mutual defense agreement, only calls for restoring the status quo and is not license.

If the EU wants to admit Muslim countries, they should start with ones that are actually in Europe and more manageable in size—Albania (70% Muslim), Bosnia (40% Muslim) and Kosovo (90?% Muslim)—before adding a huge (80 million people) mostly-Asian country.
