Does affirmative action cause mental illness in black and Hispanic students?

There have been a lot of protests from minority students on college campuses who are angry about the alleged racism they feel from the schools they have chosen to attend. But when you read this article in the Times about minority unhappiness at Amherst, a lot of it sounds like mental anxiety, even illness, created by affirmative action:

Hundreds of students crammed into Amherst College's Robert Frost Library for a sit-in against racial injustice that turned into a confessional, as one black or Hispanic student after another rose to talk about feelings of alienation and invisibility on campus. They wanted the administration to apologize for "our institutional legacy of white supremacy," among many other forms of discrimination, like "heterosexism, cis-sexism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, ableism, mental health stigma and classism." Irisdelia Garcia, a Latina sophomore from New York, said she could feel lonely.

Mental health stigma? Feelings of loneliness? What does that have to do with racism?

Andrew Lindsay, a senior from Kingston, Jamaica, who is majoring in law and political science, said he felt like the title character of Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man," a book he had read on his own in college. "You're here and you're seen, but maybe you're not seen for who you are," he said.

Why does this black man feel this way? Could it be because he feels looked upon as an affirmative action student, one picked for his race despite lower grades?

Hard to say. It does instill an attitude of victim status and usually accompanied by some demand (either in retribution or entitlement).

What it does do is to permanently install a life-crutch that can’t ever be removed.

I say it causes aggression and hate. It’s like an addict who becomes acclimated to the amount of drugs he takes. He needs more and more as time progresses to feel the effects. These affirmative action products need more and more “stuff” handed to them to feel a sense of achievement no matter how vacuous the original “achievement” was.

It leads to a lifetime of attempted lawsuits, entitlements and makes you a loser. When you win everything without earning it, you lose everything. If you have the mental capacity to eventually understand that, you could do well. If you don’t, you’ll likely die in poverty addicted to drugs and alcohol.

Mental health stigma? Feelings of loneliness? What does that have to do with racism?

These things are all, of course, the direct results of White Racism. The only solution to the all encompassing and all suffocating phenomenon of White Racism is the expropriation of all White owned property and the deportation to somewhere of all white people. The temptation to retain some White People as slaves should be resisted because in their evilness White People will rise out of their Place and ultimately come to dominate all good Minority folks yet again.

My grandkids ask why I will not patronize any black “professional”. Answer; AFFERMATIVE ACTION!
From real estate broker to physician to lawyer to whatever, I do not want to take a chance of substandard representation or care due their lack of education based on their skin color.

Stress and anxiety caused by political correctness and affirmative action..........”all children need to be able to go to college” was the battle cry. Most have not completed or even been present in high school, this is on them. I remember back in the day early 70’s if a student of color wasn't doing well, misbehaving, disruptive, not present he or she was treated differently and pushed up to the next grade without passing the prior grade to avoid parent confrontation and by orders from up above. This has only gotten worse with time. Arrogant parents demanding their child pass without the grades needed were accommodated. The system gladly accomodated and avoided a law suit and the child believing he or she accomplished this thru hard work finds themselves in a college curriculum that is beyond their capabilities. The student gets angry and looks to blame everyone else around them, the school, the system but not themselves or their parents. All the above is the problem

It isn’t the victim status that is the worst for them (mentally); it is the acceptance that they are inferior to whites & Asians, and can only be admitted as “pretend-students”. Admission to college and soft grading can’t compensate for the elementary and high school educations most of these students have missed; it often contributes to high drop-out rates or retreat into pseudo-majors (black & women’s studies, for example). In the end the four years gave them no more ability in reading, writing, or ‘rithmetic than they had before entering college - and they are just as unemployable.

I feel the same way. Sometimes we have no choice, but when we do, we are skeptical of those who may have been awarded degrees or positions for which they are untrained and unqualified.

I would agree.

"Affirmative Action" is nothing more than government enforced hatred, jealousy, and selfishness.

In a word, "Affirmative Action" is sinful.

The Bible tells us that all sin become progressively worse and worse over time. What little consious the person has left become seared as with a hot iron. The actions of the sinner become even more wicked, violent, and callous.

You are smart to do so; I apply the same logic to the other “preferred minorities” as well (Hispanics, women). I’ve seen too much incompetence and ignorance that never would have been permitted for a white guy. Why would I put my health in their hands? As long as these policies exist, then the doubts should as well.

When I was in college 20+ years ago, I truly pitied the token students; you could see the realization hit them that they were years behind their classmates, and they knew they’d been deceived. The fact that one building was dedicated to “remedial courses” (high school classes for preferred minorities - others without them were rejected by the school outright) should have tipped them off immediately.

If you look at the numbers actually involved in ethnic and gender studies, you will find that they are very small. The issue of a lack of preparation is far more widespread and afflicts high volume majors like business and psychology.

I know they initially go into those other fields, but often retreat from them or dropout altogether. They were trying to address the high drop-out rate for “preferred minorities years ago when I was in school; I guess the only solution they came up with was giving them unearned degrees in any major. A co-worker of mine has a child who is completely despondent over the fact that even with the free law degree she can’t pass the bar exam; in a real school system she wouldn’t have graduated high school.
