WARSAW, Poland – Poland will not extradite Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski to the U.S. in an almost 40-year-old case after prosecutors declined to challenge a court ruling against it.

Prosecutors in Krakow, who had sought the extradition on behalf of the U.S., said Friday they found the court's refusal of extradition to be "right" and said they found no grounds to appeal it.

The bottom line to this is that the prosecutor was willing to let Polanski walk with probation, after the psych evaluation, which was pretty much the norm for the time, given scant physical evidence. But word leaked to Polanski’s attorney that the judge was going to turn down the plea and throw him into prison for a long time, “to make an example of him”.

So Polanski probably made the right decision to bug out.

The girl got some justice by later suing him, and collecting at least $600k, probably more like $1m. She blamed the media, reporters, the court, and the judge for causing “way more damage to [her] and [her] family than anything Roman Polanski has ever done”, and opined that the judge was using her and Polanski for the media exposure.

Doesn’t he realize how much the US has changed in 40 years? How does he ever expect to collect his Medal of Freedom?
