Here is the forgotten, unpublicized, little-regarded mission by the Heisman Trust — the group that is responsible for the Heisman Trophy:
“The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.â€
Excellence with integrity. Who would have thought?

Seeing how Navy has been a bigtime success this season I would see the Heisman going to Reynolds.

I can’t disagree with that.
I’ve long felt that there were plenty of players (in the smaller schools) who were as deserving of the Heisman as someone from Alabama, Florida or USC.
They will make him a finalist. But I do not see them giving it to him.
They will give it to a big school kid who will go to a big NFL contract.
For the decades we have gathered for the Army-Navy game and rooted for Army! For the past decade PLUS, it has been a particularly forlorn hope. This year, I will AGAIN say “Go Army” but THIS Navy team - WOW! To paraphrase that old Simon & Garfunkel song, I now know where Roger Staubach’s doppleganger has now gone! FYI: Roger won the Heisman in 1963 - I feel so old!
For 10 Army classes, beginning with the Class of 2005, it has been a losing season their entire school life and this will likely make it #11. It is not fair, 14 straight loses! I demand that football parity be restored! (I’m not holding my breath!)
Well, I'm not convinced that has always been the case.
Anyone remember a crab legs thief and rape suspect by the name of Jameis Winston?
Or the computer thief Cam Newton, who may or may not have been bought and paid for by Auburn in their pursuit of a National Championship?
Ability seems to be the sole criteria, now.
I'm not taking anything away from the athletic ability of either of those aforementioned, but their integrity (and there are more) is certainly suspect.
Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work.
In a perfect world, the athletic ability would weight the decision perhaps just a little less than the diligence, perseverance and hard work assessments would.
I recall several candidates that stood head and shoulders above some winners, those winners judged solely by the amount of receiving/running yards, number of TD's, etc, as opposed to all that, with exemplary extracurricular and scholastic achievements simply ignored.
The Heisman Trophy has cheapened itself of late...and truth be told, has become a weather vane for the candidates success in placement on the NFL draft rosters.
On a personal level, as a purist in regards to the original intent and purpose of academic sports at the college level, it now means nothing to me.
Not that the Heisman Trust cares for my opinion, but it is my opinion and I do not think I'm alone in it.
Not to mention players of all other positions besides quarterback and running back.
I have been a Navy fan since 2003, my son’t Plebe Year. We still have our season tickets, and have been to every Army Game since 2003.
While I hope Navy prevails again this year, I can tell you that I believe that a weak Army team is bad for morale at West Point, bad for Army morale, and bad for our country.
Had not a family conflict interrupted, I had planned to go to West Point this past weekend with a bunch of Navy Alumni Parents to cheer for Army against Rutgers.
As a Navy fan, I would be happy so see Army go 11-1 every year.
Hubs is a ‘77 grad and pa is a ‘47 grad so we’re all in...
And yes, we root for Army whenever they play anyone else (even Air Force...)
Hope this kid, Reynolds, gets the Heisman...
Super “role model”, nice family, great attitude, all around good guy...it seems....

Reynolds and Watson are both excellent athletes, but
as it stands now, Derrick Henry - the RB from Alabama - is currently in the lead for the Heisman and will be hard for anyone to catch. Of course, everyone has a few games left to play which may or may not shake things up.
