People are outraged after the Herald Leader published political cartoonist Joel Pett's recent cartoon about Governor Elect Matt Bevin. The cartoon has been viewed by many as an attack on Bevin's adopted children.
The Governor Elect is calling Pett a racist and some people are demanding that the paper fire Pett and the entire editorial staff at the Herald Leader. The cartoon, published Thursday, shows Bevin under his desk, shivering with fear. The caption reads, "Sir, they're not terrorists...they're your own adopted kids!" The children referenced in this cartoon are the four Ethiopian children the Governor Elect and his wife adopted in 2012.
The political cartoonist has been critical of Bevin's stance on the Syrian Refugee crisis. Bevin has advocated closing the state to refugees until better background checks are in place.
Since the cartoon came out, there has been a wave of outrage from both Republicans and Democrats.
Bevin's transition team was quick to condemn Pett and the paper, Bevin released this statement:
"They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Indeed, today, the Lexington Herald-Leader chose to articulate with great clarity the deplorably racist ideology of "cartoonist", Joel Pett. Shame on Mr. Pett for his deplorable attack on my children and shame on the editorial controls that approved this overt racism.Let me be crystal clear, the tone of racial intolerance being struck by the Herald-Leader has no place in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and will not be tolerated by our administration."
Senator Whitney Westerfield went to Twitter saying, "This is wholly inappropriate, @hearldleader. You should acknowledge that and issue an apology." Even Sports Radio Host Matt Jones, a Democrat, tweeted, "Matt Bevin and I disagree on a lot and who knows what kind of Governor he will be...but his adoptions should be praised, not mocked."

Wow. Just, WOW!
I would love to see any of these white enlightened liberals spend over 50K and years of paperwork to adopt a child from a 3rd world country.
Liberals have been and will always be the kings of the cheap-shot bastards. It’s their nature.
Lib press is the lowest of the low.
.
The commie libs are sick. It’s desperation setting it. Mrs. Pett’s little Joel is a scumbag. His parents need to warm his ass with a leather belt. Then he needs some lessons from Mike Ramirez if he wants to grow up to be an editorial cartoonist. This looks like something a second grader would do.
It’s for the children.
How is it that the liberals can take any issue, in this case the issue of refugees, and make it a litmus test?
Then claim if you oppose the liberal view, you are racist/sexist/homophobic/bigoted/Islamophobic/xenophobic/(fill in the blank)phobic, if you oppose the liberal view????
The truth is children are being trained to kill by ISIS. Bevin rescued his children, gave them a life, love and safety.
It is what they do. They used to get away with it, when they owned 99.9% of the media.
Now they only own 95%, and they cannot get away with it any longer, and it is driving them crazy.
To top it off, this cartoonist has a piss poor drawing style.
Joel Pett = classless liberal twit
Yeah, he is cute. Glad the good Govenor adopted these kids. The cartoonist was wrong, but folks can fight back by not buying the paper or not accessing it on line. Money talks and everything else walks. Hit ‘em where it hurts. The wallet. They have freedom of speech and we have freedom to go somewhere else.
This blatant partisan shilling will have an impact beyond KY.
The Lexington Herald-Leader published it so they're no better. Maybe they should lose their license to print. You do have to be registered and have a license to exercise your 1st Amendment right of the press don't you?
No. You don't. If there were a government license to print, you know every conservative paper in this country would be out of business.
The way to handle this deplorable situation is for the cartoonist to be fired and the entire editorial staff suspended or worse.
