Russia came to France's aid, bombarding an ISIS stronghold in Raqqa, Syria with airstrikes and cruise missile attacks just four days after the massacre in Paris, a defense official in the Middle East tells Fox News.

The strikes unfolded as more details emerged on how the suspected Paris attack mastermind managed to slip away from airstrikes in Syria again and again, all while mocking U.S. and Western security forces.

The new Russian strikes in Raqqa may have included long-range bombers, according to the defense official. He says despite the countries' shared objective of targeting ISIS, it is "highly unlikely" the French and Russians coordinated their strikes. The official also said he did not think the French would communicate with the Russians in secret.

Fox News is told Russia did inform the U.S. before launching the new assault. The official characterized the Russian effort as "not devastating."

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the crash of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt last month, killing 224 people. On Tuesday, Russia's security service said a homemade explosive device brought down the airliner, calling it a "terrorist" act.

Under Article 5 of the NATO treaty, we’ve been attacked too. When will we do what we are supposed to do?
