World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

This photo was taken at 10:58 a.m., on November 11, 1918, two minutes before the armistice ending World War I went into effect In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

I remember as a boy hearing more about Armistice Day than Veteran’s Day (change made in 1954). Slowly over time, more people went with the Veteran’s Day name.

A friend once gave me a barreled receiver, a 1917 “US Model of 1917 Winchester” in 30-06. The serial number indicated it was made November 3-4, 1918 just days before the Armistice was signed. Later during the run-up to WWII it must have been rebarreled in a contract to JA - Johnson Automatics. It took me a few years to round up all the other parts that goes with, but today it’s a fine specimen and the barrel that’s on it now is tight as a drum.

Actually the United States didn’t officially end hostilities against Germany and Austria/Hungary until 1921 when the Knox Act was signed by President Harding at the Freylinghusen mansion in Raritan NJ.

Remember both of my grand fathers calling it Armistice Day.
During WWI, one served in the Navy, the other in the Army.

Sharing a Veterans Day note from a friend:

I am so very grateful to all the brave Americans who have served and are serving now to keep us safe and free. M heart aches for the families whose loved ones gave their lives to protect our precious way of life, and our family is deeply grateful.

There are so many ways Americans can show gratitude to those who have made enormous sacrifice on our behalf and today, this November 11th, 2015, we can all make one promise that will honor our military serving now, and all our Veterans!

On Veteran's Day next year, November 11, 2016, our Presidential election will be over and sitting in our White House will be a newly elected President of these Great United States. Please, I beg each and everyone of you who loves this country and who truly wants to honor our Veterans and Brave Heroes serving now, please do everything in your power to ensure that Hillary Clinton is NOT that person sitting in our White House! Our brave men and women of our military deserve a Commander-in-Chief who would NEVER go to bed and leave them fighting for their lives on a rooftop in some hell hole far from home!!!!!!!! And that is exactly what Hillary Clinton did to our brave Sons in Benghazi! There is a special place in hell for Hillary Clinton (and Obama) and the last place she belongs is in our White House.

Our Troops have suffered enough under the little boy in our White House who has no regard for the lives of our Sons and Daughters! Please make a commitment to them today to hold their precious lives in the highest regard by doing everything in your power to ensure Hillary Clinton will NOT be their next Commander-in-Chief! Our Troops Deserve Everyone Who Supports Them To VOTE this time around, no sitting home!!!

We must honor and do our part to preserve the precious way of life so many brave Americans have given their lives to provide and protect! This next election is the most important of our lifetime and Americans must understand, if Hillary Clinton is elected she will appoint to the Supreme Court a liberal judge who will change the balance of the court and our children's children will suffer and our country will be lost forever!

May God Bless & Watch Over Our Veterans & All The Brave Men and Women Serving Now! My family is deeply grateful for your service.

With A Mother's Heart,

Beverly Perlson
