The circular firing squad takes its toll on Republicans
The New York Post ^ | November 7, 2015 | Michael Goodwin

All the GOP guns are blazing — at each other. Mutual destruction makes it hard to win an election, and easy to lose one. Just ask President Mitt Romney.

The brutal attacks he endured in the 2012 primary softened him up for the Obama juggernaut in the general election. Obama’s claims that Romney was a greedy capitalist who destroyed middle-class jobs echoed charges made first by Newt Gingrich and other Republicans.

Trump is the master of insult this time, and takes pleasure in slashing his rivals. Truth be told, he’s good at it, with his mocking of Jeb Bush as low energy crystallizing a sense that Bush didn’t have fire in the belly and starting his slide toward the bottom.

Note the one Republican candidate who isn't participating in the circular firing squad -- and is rising because of it. In fact, he defends other Republican candidates.

I’ve now narrowed my top three to Cruz, Cruz, and Cruz.

He is not going to escape. The more he rises the more the scrutiny a candidate takes.

“Note the one Republican candidate who isn’t participating in the circular firing squad — and is rising because of it.”

Doesn’t matter - Trump is STILL not a conservative.

Well, he’s not the candidate I was talking about.

They could shift around as time go on. For example, I could be happy with Cruz, Cruz, Cruz too. Or, Cruz, Cruz, Cruz.

The toll it is taking is insufficient. There are still ten too many candidates running.

I am for any non GOPe candidate. That would be Trump/Cruz. Carson is self destructing with the TPP and Puerto Rico statehood issue.

Yep, wishful thinking. I'm sorry, but I've only met GOPe who are excited about Bush running, or Rubio or - well, the list is most of the candidates who aren't Cruz or Trump. You give them a few drinks, and they'll point out that Hillary wouldn't be so bad either.

The uniparty has to go. Anyone they don't accept is just fine with me.

Sorry, got confused.

The reason they CONTINUE TO SUPPORT RUBIO is because they know what he’ll do regarding Amnesty, should they be able to get him into office.

Yes, Mitt Romney WAS involved in a bruising exchange with the other Republican candidates in 2012. But it was Mitt who was doing the bruising, not the other way around.

If Romney had shown as much gumption and intensity in going after the Current Occupant in 2012 as he did against his Republican rivals earlier, and especially had he grabbed the Benghazi incident and ran with it, there would have been a much different outcome.

Because the Current Occupant and his entire regime were defecating bricks while they were watching the events unfold in live time that night, and they had not the least idea how to take charge.

The phone was ringing at 3 AM and nobody was answering.

Why do I remember that image so well from 2008?

We have one candidate who will not align himself with the lefty media for short term gain and is conservative across the board. And his name ain’t Trump.

Ummmmmmnnn no. I was here on FR at time. We had whole threads devoted to New Gingrich's nasty attacks on Romney using far left, anti capitalist talking points. A lot of Freepers were not too happy with Gingrich over that, even though they did not support Romney.

He was paid to take a dive? Sure looked like it to me. Neither Trump nor Cruz are playing that game. Yeb is done, so are the rest of the 1%ers. The only one left to shoot down is Rubio.
My guess is that the fact that the 1%ers are staying in is just to try and derail the leaders. Probably with GOPe money at that.

I'll second that.

It would be healthy to cut the field to 5-6 by Iowa and 3-4 going into Super Tuesday.

This from Rupert Murdock’s NY Post? The same Rupert Murdock who owns FoxNews that did it’s best to take down Donald Trump?

I remember that too...it was WEIRD, coming from Newt.

Newt always seemed to have some loose fasteners, and he really showed that then.
