State District Judge Julie Kocurek, the presiding felony judge for Travis County, was shot in the driveway of her West Austin home late Friday, authorities said. Police said the injury is not considered life threatening.

Kocurek was taken to University Medical Center-Brackenridge, where she was joined by several other Travis County judges and her court staff. Her condition initially was considered critical. but shortly after midnight officials said her condition had been upgraded to stable.

Police say the shooting was reported at 10:16 p.m. Kocurek had just returned home and was accompanied by others, police Cmdr. Mark Spangler said. No one else with the judge was shot.

A neighbor of Kocurek's told the American-Statesman that she 'just heard four pops'.

Law enforcement officials swarmed the area around Kocurek's home near Lake Austin searching for the assailant.......

Kocurek, a former prosecutor, has served as the presiding judge of the 390th District Court since being appointed by then-Gov. George W. Bush in January 1999. She went on to become the only Republican elected to a state district judgeship in Travis County. In 2006, she switched political parties and joined the Democrats....

Until last year, Kocurek served as the administrative presiding judge of all criminal courts in the county, a position she held since 2011....

Most recently, she was overseeing the case of Mark Norwood, who was convicted in the infamous 1986 killing of Christine Morton and is now facing charges in the death of Debra Baker. She also was presiding over the case of Dara Llorens, who was arrested in Mexico for the 2002 kidnapping of her daughter, Sabrina Allen.....

The political angle is this judge (Julie Kocurek) is that she was involved in the process that led to indictment of former Governor Rick Perry.

As the lawlessness increases, more of these will happen.

The judiciary is an enemy of the American people. This type of thing always starts with the hardened criminal element. Can’t say it bothers me all that much.

-- The judiciary is an enemy of the American people. --

That's a too broad brush. The judiciary is a mixed bag, although I do agree that the part of it that cuts against sound law and cuts against the constitution is growing, fast.

-- This type of thing always starts with the hardened criminal element. --

Ever present tension there. In some places the frequency of killing judges is much higher, e.g., Mexico; and it's usually a criminal. Sometimes a disgruntled civil litigant, divorce, child custody, etc.

-- Can't say it bothers me all that much. --

It'll bother you when the state brings down the hammer, which, IMO, is inevitable. The judges aren't going to correct course, the state isn't going to correct course, the friction will increase (by design of government) so government can justify a heavier hand.

This sort of thing happens all the time on T.V. crime dramas.

Maybe we should ban T.V. crime dramas.

I don’t understand why crime hasn’t been banned.

This one’s a little different... the Uniparty takes care of itself here in Austin. The Rathers/Castros, maybe? Was this ‘shoot to wound only’?

Judge Kocurek recused herself in the Perry case. She had no involvement what-so-ever in the Perry case.

Perhaps for the same reason that a cure for cancer has not been found. It's too profitable............

I chose my words carefully by saying she was ‘involved in the process’ which I take to mean her decision to recuse herself.

However, if you Google “Julie Kocarek” under the “News” category conservative individuals-sites are cited as criticizing her over the Perry case suggesting something more sinister in her role.

Don’t be surprised if the liberal blogosphere blames “Sarah Palin” or some other conservative for this shooting.

Four shots and one hit = amateur in need of range time or a message being sent.

Thats the sort of thing which escaltes into a hot war, neither side willing to give quarter. That said those in govt seem unaware they govern by consent of the governed.

That’s what I’m thinking unless the other judges felt aimed at too.

It’s a shame that she switched parties, but I hope she recovers, just the same.

“Four shots and one hit = amateur in need of range time or a message being sent.”

Read the complete article but no mention whether this was a drive by or the shooter was on foot shooting at close range perhaps through the car’s glass. Guessing the shooter was using a 9mm but no mention of that I can find. Anyway, a 9 would loose considerable volicity passing through car glass - which perhaps is why she was hit only once and is still alive.

“...close range perhaps through the car’s glass..”

Not to mention a whole lot of accuracy, a busted glass and busted ear drum.

This would qualify anyone for a Darwin Award.
