Rush, et al. are 100-percent correct but I suggest that it was all a product of that vast wasteland. Television took over beginning in the 1950s.
Before that we had multiple newspapers in every city.
There was radio but the "Fairness Doctrine" kept it from replacing the conservative newspapers as they folded. (I like puns.)
I've stated before.. in the 1960s the few complaints that I sent to the TV "news" shows were answered with "We are professionals and you're not."

I didn’t vote for GHWB or W. I knew what they were, and time proved me right. (A bit of research would have proven me right many years ago, but that takes a bit of effort)

Kirsten Powers defending Rush. Nice. One of the few liberals with a soul
OK I am a sexist cause I think she's pretty... But she defended Rush against Bubba. She deserves credit.
