UK's National Grid Suffers 'Multiple Plant Breakdowns'

Britain's National Grid has asked for more power generation capacity to come online between 4.30pm and 6.30pm on Wednesday to balance supply and demand, after "multiple plant breakdowns".

The Grid said in a statement it had issued a notice to the industry at 1.30pm "asking for more generation to be brought onto the system."

Good thing they got rid of all that coal and nuclear capacity in Europe. Just in time for winter

The company used a new emergency scheme to pay factories or other large businesses to cut their electricity usage, as power supplies ran low.

It was forced to use the scheme after unexpected power plant breakdowns coincided with higher-than-expected electricity demand and very low wind power output.

Under the emergency measure, first introduced last year but never used until now, businesses that have voluntarily signed up to take part in the scheme are paid to cut their power usage between 4pm and 8pm.

A second emergency measure, which has so far not been used, would see a reserve of old power plants fired up.

A spokeswoman would not go into specific details about the break downs.

But she said that plants and generators would typically experience some technical problems re-connecting to the grid following shut downs for maintenance over the summer.

National Grid has insisted it has the right tools in place to cope with this winter’s energy demands - with contingency plans including mothballed plants being on standby.

But its Winter Outlook report last month said that without the measures it had put in place, spare capacity - the gap between generating capacity and peak demand - would plunge to just 1.2%

National Grid has for the first time used “last resort” emergency powers to tell companies to reduce their electricity usage, in an effort to avoid the risk of blackouts.

It asked firms to reduce their power demand immediately, issuing a so-called “demand-side balancing reserve” (DSBR) notice to companies that have signed a contract to say they will take part in the demand reduction scheme.

A spokesman said this measure had never been used before, while the grid has previously said it would “only be used as a last resort, after all other actions available in the market have been exhausted”

The above quote conflicts with a previous quote from another source posted above as to this being last resort.
