But could gambling remain banned in a separate political entity? I imagine that's the crux of this whole thing.

Yeah the BBC doesn’t understand this. If the Hawaiians are considered a tribe then tribal lands are under tribal law. The State’s law doesn’t apply

I’m guessing we’re going to find out that cutting Hawaii loose from the United States is something Obama can do by means of an executive order.

If that’s the case, then Los Angeles, Miami, San Jose, Houston, and about 100 other cities are “occupied cities” since a good portion of their populations are ILLEGAL FERAL ALIENS!

I've visited Hawaii once.Spent about a week there. We had fun.But having seen it once I haven't the slightest interest in seeing it ever again.

Apart from its usefulness as a military base Hawaii is worse than useless for this country. If it were to sink into the sea tomorrow I wouldn't shed a tear.

Macadamia nuts are *way* overrated.

I have long suspected that there is big money behind the Hawaiian Sovereignty movement. Turn the Hawaiians into the equivalent of an Indian tribe and bring in casino gambling. Seems to make a lot of sense from a financial standpoint.

Hawaii will never be independent. It will be owned by the US, or by someone else. It will never be independent.

Of course it is. Texas is occupied Mexico

We are a horrible occupying oppressive people

I’m told the other day something about the first Hispanic military general. He is a two time Medal of Honor recipient. THAT goes unmentioned. His battle against us horrible Americans was much greater that his battles in Korea and Vietnam nam

I was told at a dinner party that we are an empirical nation. The kids were there so I couldn’t let it go. I said no. We are certainly not

The guy said we took Guam

We are horrible. Invaders.

So, let me see if I’ve got this right.

They get ‘recognition’ and their independence, but they don’t want TOO MUCH independence, since they insist on keeping favorable housing loans, a land trust program, health care, plus educational and cultural grants.

Is there anything in there that requires congress to wipe their butts for them, or will they manage that ‘independence’ for themselves?

But banned by the occupiers. How many people realize it was the Democrats that made the coup and armed takeover happen. This state should be a sovereign nation.

I think we should sell Hawaii to an Asian country and use the cash to buy Baja.

We were stationed in Hawaii a long time ago and try to visit when we can. We just got back from Hawaii 10 days ago. I’m guessing not quite 50% of the population are Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Samoans.... There are not many true Hawaiians, maybe 12%. A friend of ours is a high percentage Hawaiian and gets lots of benefits and privileges. She’s X Air Force and worked with my husband at stratcom. Not only do they have financial benefits, they, have an some kind of agreement with some businesses for extra privileges. We went to Dukes at the outrigger hotel and she got us a front row table at the last minute to see Kapono (Cecilio and Kapono were big in the 70’s). She got my husband a free tshirts...our dinner was discounted...true Hawaiians can buy land really cheap. It’s a great place to visit, and special to me because my middle son was born at Tripler, but I wouldn’t like to live there. Christmas was very depressing there.

Hawaii as a US state is the best thing to happen for everyone.

The native Hawaiian population was a minority in the 1890s and most people didn’t want to live under the Queen — who did’t know how to develop the economy.

The people voted by 93 percent to become a US state and have benefited tremendously ever since.

No native land was lost from the native Hawaiians (except for the US Military installations). The vast tracks of land owned by the monarchy was simply made state lands. No Hawaiian had land taken from them.

Compare the economy of Hawaii with the poverty stricken Pacific Island nations. Everyone’s lives have improved.

The missionaries preserved the language by creating a written alphebet that made it easy for English speakers to learn.

The Kapu system of the native Hawaiians was brutal, sexist and violent.

Western influence gave the Hawaiians the music that they enjoy. The Ukulele came from Portuguese workers. Before gospel music all the native people had was a few stone age chants.

Turning Hawaii over to the native people would be like returning South Dakota over to the Sioux tribes.

Idiotic. But, since liberals are in charge look for it to happen.

I don’t know about the gambling but I do know they can’t make a fake birth certificate worth a dang. Terrible liars too.

I spent 2 years there when in the Navy. After 6 months I was bored to tears. You can only go around the island so many times and they don’t have ferries to go from island to island.

Great place to visit though. Post card picturesque. Just bring your really really big wallet. That was 35 years ago. I can only imagine what the prices are like now.
