The co-pilot of the doomed Russian passenger plane that crashed in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula Saturday killing 224 people on board had doubts about the jet’s safety before the flight.

The wife of the co-pilot of the plane said late Saturday her husband had complained about the plane's condition, according to a Russian TV channel.

In an interview with state-controlled NTV, Natalya Trukhacheva, identified as the wife of co-pilot Sergei Trukachev, said her daughter "called him up before he flew out. He complained before the flight that the technical condition of the aircraft left much to be desired."

A Russian-manufactured aircraft serviced in Egypt. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I used to fly Aeroflot frequently in the days when I was poor. I remember once boarding the craft and seeing duct tape applied on the edges of the door... But I never had a bad flight, as God looks after drunks and fools...

Not Russian manufactured. Airbus A-321.

Well nothing new there, every pilot flying that clunky Russian
non military airware feels the same.

Unless aviation rules are different in Russia, the pilot has the say so on scrubbing a flight for mechanical issues. So if there were problems, why wouldn’t he call it them?

It is just as likely this story is fabrication to cover up the downing of the airliner by the Regime’s “good” ISIS terrorists.

I love the old soviet commercial planes. If nobody was sitting in the seat in front of you, you could kick the seat back down and put your legs up!

It was an AIRBUS for crying out loud! Sure, castigate the possibilities of shoddy maintenance all day long, that is not the fault of the aircraft.

My number one rule in relating the mechanical design philosophy to my design employees is to remember always that anything and everything mechanical will, eventually, break or wear out. If not maintained, the best machine in the world becomes useless.

Think back to the early 50’s before tactics became a big training issue for our pilots over Korea. Those crappy MIG’s were crawling all over our guys and shooting them out of the sky. I’m sure the last thing our guys were considering was the crappy construction or maintenance of those very fast and maneuverable tin cans.

Yes its an airbus but the Russians do not have a very disciplined approach to maintaining their civilian aircraft.

But why bother arguing about it? The A/C was likely brought down by an internal bomb, either a suicide bomber or a barometric bomb, or a surface to air missile, so the maintenance condition of the A/C is somewhat moot.

Exactly. What next, the aircraft was brought down by a YouTube video?

Who’s arguing? I am just taking my opportunity to make sure any argument is based on all the facts as we know them. Apparently you did not read the rest of my post because we agree totally on the issue of any maintenance issues.

Airbus has its own issues of goofy things going wrong with its avionics and as I recall, it is the British and French, sacre bleu, who build those things.

To the Russian oligarchy, we know that the individual is not a concern and ergo that translates directly into any focus of individual safety.

It was very early yesterday that I saw the flight altitude chart recorded and all of a sudden, it fell like a rock. Either both engines failed at the same time or something else caused a mid-air breakup. I am totally on-board with the explosion in the cargo hold.

Like I said then when it was reported the pilot issued an emergency call that they had a technical failure and requested diverting to Cairo, I’m sure the pilots of PanAm 103 were also wondering what technical problem they just experienced while they were nosediving into Lockerbie.

If he had doubts and he still flew the plane, then he is at fault.

The aircraft was an American made plane owned by an Irish company, not a Russian one, and was supposedly well maintained, according to its records. Now reports are saying that the pilot never complained about it and did not make a distress call, but that the plane broke up in midair. Bodies are being recovered over a five mile radius.

Isis released a video (shot from the ground at a distance, it looks) showing a large plane apparently exploding in the middle and then plunging downwards with a huge trail of smoke. They claim it was a missile, but it’s not thought they can reach that high, so some authorities are now suggesting that there was a bomb on board.

The Airbus A321 is not made in the US.

Ah yes, the fun days with the Soviet-era Ilyushins and Tupelovs! I remember flying with people standing in the aisles and people carrying chickens in their arms.

My favorite was the IL-18: we used to call it the "magic fingers" because of all the high-frequency vibrations in certain seats and it was impossible to see your reflection in the bathroom mirror at certain flight regimes from all the vibration.

Nonetheless, good planes and unbelievably good pilots: I remember landing in Lida during a blizzard in total white-out conditions and several inches of snow on the runway. Perfect landing - so smooth you could barely feel it.

I flew on Russian AN-24’s when in the Middle East in & out of Baghdad and Kuwait. I have photos of the bald tires and outer doors strapped shut.
