Beijing is attempting to build artificial islands, while other states in the region are looking to the US to flex its military muscle on their behalf

First, China was smart and the other countries are jealous for not building their own islands first. Second, it's not our responsibility to baby sit the world. Just like babies, all we get in return is spit up on and pooped on for our troubles.

Well, North Korea captured the Pueblo while the US was outside of the legal 12 mile limit. The North Koreans, though, claim a 200 mile limit as part of their territory.

This is pablum for the Chinese masses, who will see through the butt-covering rhetoric. If they weren't afraid of fighting a war, they'd have detained the destroyer or attacked it if it resisted boarding attempts. That's what North Korea did with the Pueblo in the late 60's. Note the the Pueblo sailed *outside* the 12-mile limit whereas this destroyer sailed inside that limit. Of course, the Pueblo's complement of weaponry consisted mainly of two .50 caliber machine guns, and could be relied on to offer little resistance. Whereas the Lassen is loaded with weaponry.
