WASHINGTON -- Only about 1 in 5 defective tires is being removed from the road through the safety recall process, a federal accident investigations board said Tuesday.
The recall system is "broken" because manufacturers are unable to contact most tire owners to warn them, according to a report from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The problem is that there is no requirement for most tire dealers to register the tires they sell with the manufacturer, the board said. Most dealers don't take the time to do so, which makes it difficult for manufacturers to determine who owns the tires and to contact them.

Why not fingerprint and register every tire tread sold, so that the owners can be traced should they leave their tracks in Obamaland or on a persons body when they drive into a crowd?/S
The problem is the government thinks it can mandate all sorts of rules and regulations that end up costing businesses more and more money, and there is no way to compensate them for it. Unfunded mandates.
Government could, in its wisdom, take some of that money they collect for old tire disposal/recycling, taxes, etc. and give some back to the seller to provide all the information it requires. As it is, government operates on the “As it is said, so shall it be” meme.
“take some of that money they collect for old tire disposal/recycling, taxes, etc. and give some back to the seller “
This fee is like unemployment “insurance.” It isn’t insurance, it’s just a tax. They don’t want to give any back because it’s “their” money. It’s already spent. The same is true of all the money the government collects under various guises. It isn’t really for the purpose they say. It pays government salaries instead.
Sure. The money gets pissed away before they even collect it. Their mandates are useless, however, if they can’t pay for them. They aren’t smart enough to figure out all the ways that someone could legally avoid what they mandate because all they care about is the “caring” in the first place. And when some group complains, they just say, “we’ll have to tax more.”
Universal tire registration?
A database of tire imprints?
Retina scan of tire purchasers?
Is there ANY sanity left out there?
I buy my tires at Discount Tire. They record the serial numbers of tires sold. Been buying my tires there for over twenty years. Great service, prices, etc. and, it’s next door to an IHOP! Thus, I try to schedule my tire visits around breakfast or lunch time :)
This is simply another move to record absolutely everything everyone does.
Next thing will be an identity card to flush your toilet. This is becoming control-freak paradise.
Before I shoot them I would like to give them a hearty FU.
Why not just advertise a list of the known bad tires that have defects?<p.The government doesn’t do actual public service work - it always opts for the interfering control methods that expands its power over the People.
My toilet paper has declined in quality over the last few weeks (that’s a serious fact). Regrettably there is no recall program for toilet paper.
I just bought a turkey fryer. The stupid thing has a 15 minute timer on the burner. More government intruders saving us from ourselves.
It looks to be easily removable
Well, if your toilet paper doesn’t satisfy you after use, then you should mail it to the appropriate regulatory agency and demand that they implement a testing and certification process to ensure that only government-approved toilet paper can be sold to the public.
I can’t even use both sides of it any more.
“I cant even use both sides of it any more.”
Amen brother..... Amen
There’s always the Muslim-approved method that doesn’t involve toilet paper at all.
“Theres always the Muslim-approved method that doesnt involve toilet paper at all.”
There’s members of the human species that would pay me for the privilege of licking me clean.
Well.....Hell’s bells!
I never get notified about my defective 48 hour deodorants either...!!
Or my defective weather forecasts!
How about all those defective household cleaners that claim they have little scrubbing bubbles that never scrub anything!
Then there is the defective cellular networks, fishing lures, engine additives, and wrong size clothing.
What’s a citizen gonna do?
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
