Ted Cruz's campaign for president says he has picked up the backing of a billionaire from the state, as well as its lieutenant governor.
Darwin Deason, a technology entrepreneur, and his son, Doug, say they support Cruz. They had given millions of dollars to the 2016 efforts of former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who ended his candidacy last month.
Also coming into the Cruz fold is Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
Patrick's backing of Cruz gives the Texas senator a powerful surrogate in a delegate-rich state where Republican primary voters go to the polls...

This major accomplishment undercuts those who disingenuously say Cruz that is "all talk" - he set out to takeover the Texas GOP, and he's done it.
Likewise, Cruz is the ONLY one who will transform the national GOP back to a limited government, constitutional party. And taking over the national GOP, is the ONLY thing that will save the Republic.
If Texas really wanted to have an impact, they would have moved their primary to March 15 and made it winner-take-all. Why didn’t Texas do that?

The Texas GOP has become progressively conservative to the point that I doubt whether George Bush would be elected today for any meaningful role.
We voted Ted Cruz for senate over the establishment candidate and we will do it again.
The only thing I can think about is this. What does the billionaire want in return?

I suppose that there are too many “favorite sons” in Texas. As in Fla, other candidates skip the state if they have no chance to pick up delegates.

I know our founders specifically created a form of governance that allowed everyone to run for office. Otherwise we would have a super wealthy aristocracy.
Just think, if the idiots who have recently joined team Obama in his opposition to Citizens United got their way, only 2 or 3 hundred people nation wide would be able to run. The wealthier they are the better their chances would be.

Not quite. It's Texas conservatives that are redefining the GOP in this state. Ted Cruz didn't set out to oust the GOPe in Texas. He ran for the Senate just being himself. IMHO he is simply the recipient.

I’d like to see a Texas poll for the GOP presidential canidates.
The last one was back in mid to late Sept and nothing since.

Yup.
Our founders ended up opposing an aristocracy and allowing less well funded candidates to take donations was a means of keeping them competitive with wealthy candidates. Obviously money wasn’t as big of an issue in campaigns in those days but keeping rich and poor equally represented was a very big deal.
The argument over aristocracy is what wrecked the friendship between Jefferson and Adams. Adams wanted an aristocratic house of lords and Jefferson wanted the pauper sitting next to the wealthy baron as an equal in congress.
It pays to be respectful to the competition.

First. it was not my personal assessment that Cruz had “hijacked” the Texas GOP...George W. Bush stated that Cruz had hijacked the state GOP and was trying to do the same nationally.
As for the State having become intrinsically conservative by which Cruz benefited— it would appear that the subsequent elections of Cornyn and George P. Bush would belie that argument.
