HEMEIMEEM AIRBASE, Syria (AP) Sleek combat jets loaded with precision bunker-buster bombs roar into the skies as soldiers in desert-style uniforms march past rows of neat housing at this Russian military base at one of Syria's largest airports.
The air campaign in Syria, Russia's first military action outside the former Soviet Union since the war in Afghanistan, shows a revamped Russian military, which sharply differs in both capability and mindset from the old, Soviet-style force.
It is capable of quickly projecting power far from Russian borders, widely uses drones and precision weapons, and cares about soldiers' comfort.

The Russian Army’s performance is impressive and the clean cut professional soldiers are marked contrast to the old Soviet army.
This is a high tech Russian fighting force. No wonder Putin has a 90% popular approval rating at home.
That the Russians are totalitarian thugs who might be beating up on someone we might agree needs beating up, they are not our friends, and they are not the friends of anyone else who might not want to live in a thugocracy.
Putin and his ilk don’t change their spots.
Yeah, well... but at least Putin is looking out for his country and his people, unlike *cough* Obama/Dems/GOPe *cough* here in the U.S. You might see a totalitarian thug but obviously the Russian people see a leader who’s probably the greatest Russian leader since Peter the Great.
I hope our intel community is doing their job and taking notes.
He is looking out for them alright, until they cross him.
Then they will find out what his KGB heritage is all about. Of course, many of them are far too young to know anything about that, and it will come as a surprise to them.
They probably do like it right now when his gaze is outward.
They certainly are, and they are forwarding them to ISIS, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the Emirates and Boko Haram with the arms shipments, as we speak.
Never mind the body bags containing Russian soldiers who’ve died from diseases that they were not inoculated for.
Cross him, how? Putin is not sending Russian civilians to the gulags in Siberia or executing advisers.
Yep, Barack Obola has a better plan, send your military unarmed so it won't be disease that kills them, and use the US government to import the diseases back to the American homeland for all Americans to enjoy.
This proves Obola obviously cares far more for Americans than Putin does for Russians.
Gotta go with Obola on this one.
Well formulated comment!
The Russian really have some of or all of their most advanced weapons in Syria, that part is not prpaganda.
Got a link for that?
Yep.
I am too lazy to /s in my comments, plus it is easier to provoke and insult Obama's Homofascista Islamonazi Maiden shills on FR, and I keep up on most foreign weapons systems, so this one was red meat for me.
Somebody wake up Obama and tell him Syria isn’t too far away from Saudi Arabia.
What happens if he shuts down all the oil in the gulf but Iran?
What happens to the price of gas?
Putin might be waging Total War and Obama is taking a nap.
here’s a link I posted earlier you might find fun watching - an overview of the stuff in Syria - is on some proving ground in Russia and the film is reversed, but interesting none-the-less. First time I saw their amphibious light tank.

The Germans got to test a lot of their new weapons in the Spanish civil war on Franco’s side.
Franco’s still dead?
What’s one have to do with the other? This isn’t the 30s and the enemies are completely different in aims and motives. Enjoy the crispy dead jihadis while they last.
Take the pointer, that while we are demoralizing, downsizing, ROE hog tying, and slashing funding for our mil, the Russians are doing just the opposite.
