HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A 14-year old girl could be charged with assault and battery after she threw a baby carrot at one of her former teachers. School disciplinary documents allege a baby carrot was used as a weapon in an assault and battery of a Moody Middle School teacher.
"I don't even know how to combat the stupidity," Karrie May, whose 14-year-old daughter Aliya is currently suspended for launching the vegetable, said. May said her daughter has been out of school for a month.
"I don't understand this,” May said. “Yes, it happened, and I can see a couple of days in school detention or even a couple days out-of-school suspension. But this goes way beyond that. We have to go to court, and her charges aren't small: assault and battery with a weapon."
Aliya said she left class and saw a teacher she had last year in the hallway. So, as a joke, she said she reached for a baby carrot she had stashed at lunch and tossed it towards the teacher, never thinking she'd hit her in the forehead.
"If it's a soft carrot, it may not be as offensive,” said CBS 6 legal expert Todd Stone. “But if it's a raw carrot, you don't have to have an injury or show you were hurt to prove a battery. It just has to be an offensive, vindictive touch. That's what the law says."
Henrico Schools declined to comment on the carrot case.
Karrie May said the school’s Disciplinary Review Board sent a letter recently to try to get her daughter to admit guilt. She said they respectfully declined. Now mom said they await a summons to see what happens next.
"This could go before a judge and there could be sufficient evidence to find her guilty, but I don't think it's something a judge would want to find her guilty of,” Stone said. “They may offer her counseling, sort of a carrot at the end of a stick."

I had braces as a kid. There was a tiny rubber band that attached to hooks on the upper and lower braces to accomplish the desired vector analysis...anyway, I could release those rubber bands with my tongue, propelling them forward toward the back of my teacher. She couldn’t feel them due to the thickness of her Franciscan habit.

I’m planning on homeschooling this year. The teachers treat the students AND the parents like morons. Their arrogance is unbelievable where we live. You ought to see ‘car line’. The teachers are jack-booted thugs. Never had that when I was in school. We were on our own! If I wasn’t there when my mom picked me up.....I was grounded.
Try to pop in to talk to staff? The ‘Pretorian Guard’ stop you and say you need to ‘email’. Unbelievable.

They need to post a sign CARROT FREE ZONE. I am sure that this really could escalate into a deluge of tomatoes, limes, and onions. It might be a form of free speech. Like flag burning. They need to call the ACLU.
Whatever happened to the “Board of Education”? One guy I had in Jr. High made his own out of oak and had holes drilled in it for less air resistance on the downswing. Had a nice finish on it, too.
Michelle Obama’s fault. If the girl was eating french fires instead of carrots, this never would have gotten out of hand.

It used to be a high honor in my Jr. High shop class to have made the paddle the principal chose to use for the year.

of course in the other direction, some schools now allow black "boys" to get away with everything and anything so as not to get them down the wrong "path"...

I’ll just say that I want to hear the Teacher’s side of the story before I make up my mind. Maybe this girl actually cussed the teacher up one side down the other, and then threw the carrot at the teacher’s face as hard as she could.
We’re only getting Mom’s version here.
But these days, parents would threaten the school with a lawsuit - like Clockboy.
So the school involved the police instead.
