Carson says he’ll abolish Medicare
Allen West ^ | 10/23/2015 | Michele Hickford

Republicans are consistently attacked whenever they mention reforms to entrenched entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. But presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is going boldly where no Republican has gone before: declaring he would abolish Medicare completely. As Politico reports, “Carson … would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions.

When pressed on his position in May by CNBC’s John Harwood, Carson said Americans would support the elimination of Medicare when presented with the facts of his plan. “When people are able to see how much more freedom they will have, and how much more flexibility they will have, and how much more choice they would have, I think it’s going to be a no-brainer,” he said. Not surprisingly, Politico says “GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads. “This isn’t a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific,” said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.”

Do we really care what an advisor on McCain’s failed 2008 campaign says? Maybe the fact that Ben Carson is actually a medical professional means he might have an understanding about how the industry works? And haven’t these establishment types noticed Ben Carson doesn’t really care about politics? Which is why perhaps he’s leading the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac poll?

He’s MUCH MORE likely to get my vote if he keeps on talking about dismantling the welfare state. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, SSDI, TANF, WIC, SNAP, etc. ALL must be eliminated.

2000 bucks covers my endoscopy and colonoscopy every year for barretts and pre cancerous tumors in intestine.

might not even cover those two.

IF EVERYTHING were being slashed, politician’s salaries, the size of the fed govt, welfare, SNAP and On and On, i would be willing to pay the difference or even sacrifice my health to save the country.

But it wont work out that way. People, middle class, will die as a result.

Right. Because Republicans and "conservatives" are just as addicted to the welfare state as demonicrats.

Prove me wrong.

Of course, he speaks the truth. Medical care is astronomically high exactly BECAUSE it is third-party subsidized.

Don't buy the koolaid. You would STILL get your necessary procedures, probably at a deep, deep discount, and the insurance companies would likely make MORE money off the deal.

The prices listed on EOB's are shams. Don't believe them for a second.

That’s like expecting a mechanic to run a car company.

This is not the 1st time the good Dr has taken a subject matter that is a 3rd Rail and discuss it out in the open with boldness as discussion of said items further to erode the thin veil of Political Correctness.

His other subjects were:

* Closing down the VA
* Discussing how German and world History would have been altered if Jews were armed in the 30's in Germany.

If you have more please contribute, but regardless we owe him a debt of gratitude for speaking the unspeakable or so deemed so by the orthodox apparatchiks...

Every year? My dear fellow,
allow me to extend my sympathies.
The procedure itself is only
slightly better than what you
have to go through two days
before it.

I agree... For sure it would have to be phased out. People who have paid into it all their life... it and Social Security.... its not gonna be easy to take it from them. And my guess is it is old people / christian conservative voters that are largely supporting Carson. He better be careful or he’ll drop like a rock.

Carson is on the right track, but why should the government be the paying party? Beyond that $2,000 a year? So he thinks $80k will take care of people’s retirement health care?

There will be interest growth, but it’s not going to grow that much. $150,000 at retirement would probably not cover your health care needs.

Get the government out of it. These unfunded mandates are already the big problem. Put people back to work and let them take care of their own needs with savings accounts.

It sucks. But beats the alternative.

pre cancer in intestines and barretts requires every two years i think? but doc is extra cautious.

i’m 47, not afraid of dying at all, VERY afraid of dying from intestinal or stomach cancer.

seen it in good friend and its ugly. very ugly.

He may have just picked a wrong battle field.
This will probably go over like Bush’s plans on Social Security reform. It’s the same crowd of older folks for the the dems to scare voter bracket.
Bush still won, but I don’t remember it being a battle he picked in the primaries.

He really should come out for the abolishion of Obama care and a good way to transition away from it for the few that it has actually worked for.
I think their may be a couple of people.

I’ll still drink the kool aid cause it feels good :()

but i get your point.

right now, my endoscopy is covered 80 percent. But i CANT get a figure from anesthesia guy or hospital on what final cost would be or if they would respect my plans limits on what they will pay out.

Just a kneejerk reaction to his plan. I’m sure more will unfold about it.

“Hmmmm. Will what Ben Carson just said about Medicare SINK his campaign? “

Worse. It validates what the far leftists have been claiming the Pubs would do to Medicare, and Carson has just made Medicare an issue that ALL Pubs WILL have to address one way or the other.

I can see why the kommie loves having Carson in the race; namely, while Trump is armor-plated and media attacks only bounce off him and ricochet back onto the themselves, loose cannon Ben lobs one cannon ball after another onto trampolines that bounce back and hit himself AND the other Pub candidates.

Like I said, every bit as addicted to the welfare state as the demonicrats.

For sure it would have to be phased out.

If it isn't "phased out" now, it will come crashing down around our ears later. And not that much later. It's long past time to quit blabbering and begin dismantling the welfare state.

Yep... that's exactly right. End food stamps, food cards, welfare, after school basketball, government subsidies, school lunch programs, subsidized obammy care, and on and on.... the list is miles long. Many of us have subsidized this stuff all of our lives and never gotten a single penny FROM the government. My wife is three years away from Medicare, and just started social security this month. I don't have a problem taking either of those after 50 years of supporting everything else in the welfare state. And yeah, I could probably be means tested out of Social Security, but they better not try.

I'm all for dismantling it. I'll give you some ideas where to start, and what to dismantle last.
