Syria's President Bashar al-Assad has held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on an unannounced visit to Moscow.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the two leaders had discussed the fight against what he called terrorist groups, the continuation of Russian air strikes and Syria's plans for its troops.

But key questions remain about what the men see for Syria's future, as Jim Muir explains.

...there can be no solution to the Syrian conflict without Russia's involvement.
The only solution to the conflict would be the death of everyone in Syria -- so yeah. That is the path Putin has chosen. Should be fun. No boots on the ground for us, please. No mention was made I suspect of the fact that Putin has blocked every measure that had any chance of success to bring about a negotiated settlement. The BBC did its usual bang-up job in the article linked off the original page; the civil war 'developed' from protests (it didn't -- it 'developed' from Assad's massive crackdown and opening fire on protestors); that 4 million Syrians are making the 'dangerous' trip to safety in Europe -- they aren't, they're mostly jihadists and from many different countries; etc.

The solution is Assad’s opponents who supports the Sunni position are eliminated. Everything else falls into place.
