There is no rock, pile of dessicated dung, tumbleweed or chunk of ice on the face of the planet that isn’t vital to our national defense. Each needs a base and is worth defending with everyone else’s son’s or daughter’s death or dismemberment, to the last peso we can print with the last scrap of paper we have borrowed. Each rock, pile of dessicated dung, tumbleweed and chunk of ice should enjoy full membership in NATO.
At least that is the opinion which seems to be held by some.

To me it shows the native anti-Taliban types are spooked and looking for back up insurance from Russia?
I thought the Northern Alliance were the ones that the U.S. backed during Soviet Russia's occupation of Afghanistan.
Since Russia is allied with Iran, it makes sense that fellow members of a ‘greater Persia’ would join the party....
Afghans and Persians basically speak the same language, too.
After 9/11 the USA co-opted the Northern Alliance.
