In his first known international trip since civil war began in Syria, President Bashar Assad has just returned from a quick visit in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Assad reportedly briefed Putin on Syria's current and future military operations.
Assad's trip was kept secret until after Tuesday's meeting and after the Syrian leader's safe return home.
The Kremlin's official account of the meeting includes a quote from Assad, saying, "I want to thank the Russian people once more for the help you are giving Syria and express the hope that we will vanquish terrorism."
Announcing the visit, state media in Syria and Russia say the two leaders discussed how to fight terrorism, and that the sessions several meetings and a working dinner also included foreign and defense officials from both countries.
From Beirut, NPR's Alison Meuse reports for our Newscast unit:
"Putin promised he'd work with world powers to find a political solution to the conflict, now in its fifth year. Assad said that terrorism is the main obstacle to peace, and that Russia's air campaign now in its fourth week has halted the spread of terror.
"Washington and its regional allies say Assad is part of the problem. But in recent weeks, some of Assad's staunchest critics, including Turkey, say he could be part of a political transition."

Is that supposed to surprise anyone?
I think that I would probably get along with him [Putin] very well.
Donald Trump, CBS Face The Nation, this past Sunday
Trump doesn't know squat about foreign policy and/or military issues, as if you are actually concerned about American interests. Cruz is the only one of the bunch that should even be considered for the top job.
You assume that it’s Assad or ISIS. That’s the reason Assad doesn’t attack ISIS, and Russia has barely attacked them.
I dare you to cut and paste what that view I said is RT like. I go out of my way to NOT post Russian sources.
Go on, I double dare you. And again, show me one post of yours commenting on the Syrian Christians and their plight.
I dare you on that as well.
From Juan Cole's blog: On the 11th day of the Russian intervention, the Syrian Arab Army has taken the town of Atshan in the northern hinterland of the city of Hama, after fierce battles with the rebels there, including al-Qaeda (the Nusra Front or Support Front). Atshan fell to the Syrian Army on the 10th of October but was recovered by the Army of Conquest (Jaysh al-Fateh, a coalition of fundamentalist militias that includes al-Qaeda) and their allies, Arab tribesmen in the region. Now it has fallen again to the Syrian Army.
I trust Trump’s judgement and world view over some disgruntled hausfrau’s world view.
And part of Trumps "judgement and world view" is to welcome with open arms Russian expansion. I understand why you (and no doubt) Putin would want him in charge. No mystery there.
Amen. The putinista who favors Trump manages to smear Trump by siding with and conflating a leader hostile to US interests with Trump. And, apparently, that type of putinista favors Russian interests, as Putin dictates them, over those of the US and our allies. They’re traitors at heart because they favor an unfree Russian empire and the weakening of the US. They’ve more in common with Obama than with real conservatives.
I hope you don’t do anything rash when Trump becomes president.
I’m not playing double dare you with a putinista monkey boy.
Juan Cole? The guy who writes about Islamophobia? I guess you like Islam when it’s Iranian Islam and it’s helping to build Putin’s empire.
You have no such examples to play ball with.
The Cold War was relatively peaceful because no one wanted the Superpower Conflict to be fought on their territory. With Nobel Peace Prize winner (appropriate term for an award that definitely was not earned) Obama, we may finally get that direct conflict for the first time in generations.
Yes, if Assad's enemy is saying this that means the other side can't hide it any more. As you see, I used an anti-Assad and anti Russia's Putin source. So that takes away from your charge I post pro Putin stuff from RT.
:-)
I don't put Russia on the top of my worry list.
Russia: killing the jihadists Americans refuse too.
But things could change.
You’re an an oblivious buffoon.
Your trolling means you lose.
You join here recently, this year, and you want to tell me and others I’m a troll? I think you’re either paid by Putin or Trump. They’d both do that, and your posts are just dumb enough to be nothing more than one would get from a paid putinista.
All you do is insult people attack them if they don't hold your views.
If your argument based on facts beats mine - more power to you. If not, then you being on here longer matters not at all.
